2.0 out of 5 stars lousy battery
The turbo trimmer trims well, but the battery's capacity is dramatically diminished after a year. Barely holds a single-trim charge.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, October 22, 2009

PLEASE READ ENTIRE REVIEW: It gets better...

The Ugly: Not the best instructions or pictures. Stand 'set up' instructions poor. Because of design, it's hard to determine which accessories go (and fit) where on stand. Even when I figured out what went where, they didn't fit properly. The instruction sheet picture quality is not good. In order to get a good picture of the stand with all accessories on it, I had to go to conair.com and blow up the picture from the instruction sheet.

The Bad: Storage/Charging Stand. Unlike previous Conair multi-trimmers (over prior 18 years I've owned 2), this stand is poorly designed and manufactured. The base should be weighted; it's not. Parts and accessories should fit securely; they don't. Stand should hold parts and accessories as if they were designed as a system; it doesn't. Except for the trimmer body itself, the big beard guide and the oil tube, none of the other accessories really fit the stand properly. If you try to move the filled stand, 2 or 3 items will fall out every time you try to move it. Very poor design.

Changing Heads. This could be a little better but isn't really 'bad.' Read the instructions, and you'll find removing the main head isn't very difficult. The [very minor] problem comes in putting the other heads on. Be sure the white 'drive pin' from the trimmer body is aligned with, and fits into the white plastic tube in the attachment before you apply pressure to secure the new head. If you don't, it appears you could risk damaging the plastic components.

Fortunately, it gets much better from here.

The Good: Trimmer body and accessories. Good RPMs on motor. It does a good job trimming and doesn't seem to bog down in thick or wiry hair.
The nose/ear attachment could be just a little longer to reach inside ear/nose. But even as is, the reach is adequate and it does a very decent job, although the cutting tip gets a little warm with prolonged use.
The mini- detailing head is great for working around areas of the face with little clearance, and removes hairs well.
The shaving foil works well on small areas for clean-ups, but is definitely not intended for full face shaves.
Haven't used all the guides and combs, but those I have appear to do what they're intended to do, and satisfactorily.
Haven't tried it for bikini type trims, but appears it will do the job, as well.

All in all, and excepting the 'charging' stand, it met all my expectations from previous Conairs I've owned. I'd have rated 5* if the stand wasn't so poor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible battery! Stand too., August 16, 2011
This review is from: Conair GMT189RGB 13-Piece All-In-One Grooming System (Health and Beauty)
The battery barely lasts and if it runs out, then you're out of luck. Not only will it not work because the charge is gone, but even if you try to plug it in, it still won't work until the battery recharges. Also, you cannot replace the battery.

The stand doesn't even seem like it's made for the unit and everything falls out of it.

This is a poor excuse for an electric trimmer! No instructions... A
Ziplock bag is a better place to store the accessories than the charging stand! If the battery doesn't hold up after a few months... It's headed for the trash can!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars WORST EVER. AVOID ALL CONAIR PRODUCTS, July 14, 2011
This review is from: Conair GMT189RGB 13-Piece All-In-One Grooming System (Health and Beauty)
Conair should really be ConYou. These trimmers do the job, and have nice attachments, but this company uses the worst batteries. Which I guess is how they make their money (they die quick and you have to go out and get an other set). I used this trimmer once a week, and every single time, I would get about 5 seconds of use out of it before it would snag on my beard and die. I tried to remember to charge it the day before I needed it, but that just got real old real fast. Ultimately I smashed the living hell out of it and tossed it away. I had it for about a year and got a hand full of uses out of it. Unlike my $15 Braun electric shaver which I have had for about 7 years and still keeps a good 2 month charge.

I dont know why I thought this would be different, I have had zero luck with Conair products in the past. I guess I'm just stoopid. Totally not worth the money.

The shaver itself seems to function well, but the attachments and the base are much cheaper quality and a poor design compared to my previous one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor battery--Not replaceable, December 11, 2010
I only use this about 1x/month and the battery died after about 24 uses (2 years). I took it apart and the battery is NOT replaceable. It's soldered in. Have to throw it away. Poor design!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Trimmer - Lousy Battery, April 2, 2010
By
Gadgetguy (Austin, TX USA) - See all my reviews
I have owned this trimmer twice. The first I bought locally and when it stopped holding a charge after one week, I returned it to the store for a replacement. The second one has lasted and served me well for a year now and I really like the T-blade and overall functionality of the trimmer, but the battery now will barely hold a charge long enough for a single trim. This is the result of a cheap charger that does not properly condition the cheap NiCad battery pack. This is a common problem with all NiCad batteries (as well as NiMH to a slightly lesser degree). They really require a good electronic conditioner/charger that will measure the remaining charge and drain the cells the rest of the way to empty before initiating the charging phase. This is the only way they will last. Anyway, you're not going to get that in a $25 trimmer, so I am retiring mine and will switch to a cord/cordless model so that when the battery is done, at least I can still use it plugged in.

Trimmer works great! Stand is flaky (parts don't fit well) but the product works just fine & holds a charge for a long time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Product, January 11, 2012
This review is from: Conair GMT189RGB 13-Piece All-In-One Grooming System (Health and Beauty)
I received this Conair Trimmer as a gift in 2005. I used this product at least on a weekly basis for all of my hair grooming, especially for keeping my hair manageable in between hair cuts. It worked great for nearly 7 years before the battery suddenly stopped charging. I never had a problem with any of the components, but I do recommend you apply the lubrication and clean the blades every so often. After I submit this review I will be purchasing another and I hope to get another 7 years from my new one.

I highly recommend this product for all general hair grooming purposes.
