Conan At His Greatest!, January 9, 2012
This review is from: Conan Lord of the Black River (Mass Market Paperback)
This was the second Conan book I read and boy was it a phenomenal! I first read it in December 2006 and recently reread it in December 2011. This was a book that had everything: An overland journey replete with land battles, a naval expedition dealing with dangerous city-states, tempting sirens, ruthless pirates, roving religious fanatics on a desert jihad, cannibals and everything in between!
Conan, recently having completed assisting the people of a Kothian city-state overthrow the yoke of a ruthless oppressor, travels to Baalur, where the city is in the midst of a dream plague cast upon them by the witch Zerti. Zerti, heretofore thought to have been slain, is alive and well and causing great mischief to the people of Baalur. The white lotus is the only known cure for the dream plague. Conan takes command of a force of 1000 men from the city in search of the mythical white lotus. But it is a journey that is replete with danger and hidden perils. Yet the mighty Conan, a man with fierce determination and tenacity uses his natural abilities to lead the soldier-explorers of Baalur to the source of the Styx River. It is there where they are able to locate the lotus and procure enough samples for the return trip to Baalur where they shall administer the cure to the city's inhabitants.
I highly recommend this novel. Even though when I first read it I was new to the world of Conan, I was able to immerse myself in the plot without feeling left out because of characers from Howard's previous novels reprising their roles. Indeed, if anything this made me want to read more of Howard's books. I did and only later did I discover the book where Zerti made her initial appearance. This book is a treasure and fits in well with the overall Conan Chronology (See Wikipedia Conan Chronology).
I recommend other novels written by Leonard Carpenter. He, along with the late L. Sprague De Camp and Robert Jordan were the best of the Conan pastiche writers; they were worthy sucessors to Robert Howard.
