5.0 out of 5 stars Zornian Dream Team November 28, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
"The Concealed" brings together Bar Kokhba and The Dreamers. In this sense, it is the Zornian version of Marvel's The Avengers. The band is composed of John Medeski, Mark Feldman, Trevor Dunn, Joey Baron, Kenny Wollesen and Erik Friedlander. So minus a couple of cats like Marc Ribot and Jamie Saft, these guys are the John Zorn All-Stars. "The Concealed" is a melodically satisfying journey. This is a relaxing adventure that is as cerebral as it is enchanting. While there is much collaboration, the two groups generally trade-off. A Dreamers tune will lean on the jazzy side of things while the following Bar Kokhba song will have a chamber sensibility. While classified as one of Zorn's mystical works, it lacks the harp and orchestral bells that characterize other works in the series like "Vision in Blakelight." Along similar lines, The Dreamers deliver their magical chill vibe but leave the lounge, surf and exotica at home. With the extraneous elements filtered out, this is a serious, straight effort combining Jewish melodies with jazz and chamber aesthetics. For those familiar with the two groups, "The Concealed" offers instant gratification. Indeed, if there's a drawback to be found with this project, it's that there was a missed opportunity for Bar Kokhba and The Dreamers to step outside of their usual paradigms. A refreshing exception to this is, 'The Way of the Sly Man.' A solo piano piece, John Medeski channels Jewish music through New Orleans. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars BAR KOKHBA AND THE DREAMERS REVISITED December 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
John Zorn must be the most prolific composer of this year. More of 10 CD in one year, and all of them interesting . I suppose this one will be the last of 1012, an also is very interesting. Is the perfect combination of Bar Kokhba project and the group The Dreamers. Jewish melodic music with esoteric secrets and hidden traditions out of the east. Is a magic travel to Persepolis, Kafiristan, Bokhara... with excellent musicians. John Medeski, Kenny Wollensen, Eric Friedlander, Joey Baron and Trevor Dunn. A all star sextet with different combination, solo, duos, trios...the result is a wonderful music perfect to dream in others worlds. Easy to listen and perfect to this time of the year. Less serious and sadness than Bar Kokhba but more intensive than The Dreamers. Zorn again hit me. Thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Approachable... January 21, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A lot of work by John Zorn can be difficult to listen to for many people. I would consider myself one of these people. However, I found this work to be very approachable and enjoyable, even on the first listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous music scapes May 22, 2013

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A very gorgeous and rich small group with eastern melodies (as in middle east sounding). A lot of great ensemble playing. I would like more adventurous solos.
