This review is from: Concept of Belief in Islamic Theology: A Semantic Analysis of Iman and Islam (Hardcover)
This book goes into significant detail about these two terms: islam and imam. Documents understandings from the early "Muslims" up to more recent "scholars". Interestingly, the early "Muslims" seem to have had varying views on these two terms, which sometimes led to conflict. For me this book is not as good as his other works, e.g. "God and Man in Koran" and "Ethico-Religious Concepts" in the Quran" (pdf available online). For those unfamiliar with Toshihiko Izutsu's works, his analysis is brilliant, in fact some of the best I've seen. If you are looking for an analysis and history of these two terms, then this is the book to get however.
