Ok, I will begin by saying this: I personally dig the scream-sing combo in metal music. If you don't like screaming & singing, this is definitely not your cd. On with the review..
The album begins with a peaceful but ominous acoustic piece entitled "The Gift". It makes me examine the moon and the sky on the cover of the album. Then the opening chord of "Awake & Lifeless" rings out, and the fire starts to make its way into the picture. Then, everything kicks in, and the intensity leaves your head spinning. The fire now engulfs the entire cover (metaphorically of course). But when the chorus arrives, the fire moves to the right side of the picture and the music rests in an almost flawless medium of harmonious singing and head-kicking instrumentation. This album has a great mix of insane blistering screaming and melodious singing. The music is also very tight and technical, containing tasteful yet insane soloing and precise and hammering drums. I love the panning of the two guitars in "Idea & Some Rope" and there are some awesome technical beats, fills, & breakdowns in "The Cycle". But every song has something to offer, mind you. The only reason the album doesn't get a full five stars from me is because as catchy, creative, and well-done as it is, it sounds like other metal albums/bands and therefore lacks originality. This album is a worthy purchase though, don't get me wrong. I don't think you would be disappointed.

A Dozen Furies Lives up to their title,
By
This review is from: A Concept from Fire (Audio CD)
I would have been lying if I had said I didn't have my preconceptions about this band. Once I heard the first song, their concept from fire burned all of mine. This is a very good cd on it's own recogniscence. It does kind of sound like everything else that is out there right now(Killswitch,Shadows Fall,Avenged Sevenfold(when they were good) but, these guys are pretty good musicians and they really do bring it. The title track and "The Cycle" are my favorite songs. The guitar riffing is spectacular and the drummer is insane and very Vinnie Paul influenced. Pretty good cd. If you don't have it then go and get it.

I was walking around in Walmart when this album caught my eye and I recognized the name from when they went on tour with GWAR (one of my favorite bands) so I figured why not? Lets givem a try. When I got home I quickly popped it in my cd player and was just shocked. Every song on this CD is very good (and listenable if your not a death-metal fan) So I would definately recommend givin this one a try.

A Dozen Furies is a great metal band with some excellent guitar riffs and good vocals. I really enjoy every song on this album, and it would be one to pick up and listen. I gave it 5 stars because the cd has some very good vocals, this guy can sing very well but he also screams excellent. I have no idea what metalcore is because i only know metal i don't consider metalcore a genre of music. Sorry.......

This album is easy to listen to and has a great overall sound. It's good and heavy without loosing it's musical merit vocally or otherwise. The drumming on this album is mind blowing and very inspiring... I am now considering going out and buying a drum kit just so I can learn these songs. This album is definately worth buying for fans of heavy, hard-rocking music. I look forward to hearing more from them as they mature and perfect their sound. If you're considering buying it... do! These guys are big stars in the making.

Best Dallas Metal Band in Years,
By Max Townsend "M.T." (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Concept from Fire (Audio CD)
The last significant metal band to come out of the North Texas area was undoubtedly Pantera...since that time however, Dallas has really lacked in producing good metal bands. Sure, you have Drowning Pool etc, but none in my opinion can compare to the new album from A Dozen Furies. From the first to last track, you know you're in for a good chunk of hardcore metal full of blistering guitar riffs and good screaming. This band has real talent (which many metal bands don't), and can also back themselves up on stage with a great live performance. But in all, A Concept from Fire should be a sure hit with all metal fans alike. Do yourself a favor and get this record.

... And that's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact in A Dozen Furies case, it's a very, very good thing. Having received notable popularity after Marc their guitarist appeared on Battle For Ozzfest nearly a year ago, all eyes were on A Dozen Furies when it came time for them to unleash an album on the masses, and A Dozen Furies has more than thrown down the gauntlet. "A Concept From Fire" is a dazzling blast of metal and hardcore, rolled into one tight, memorable package. ADF had more than enough pressure on their shoulders following the success of the show, as everyone now knew them from their exposure on the show, and their debut album is a testament that A Dozen Furies is a serious band that indeed has plans of being around in the future.
Opening up with the hard hitting "Awake And Lifeless", the band introduces you to their blend of modern metal and hardcore. Swedish influenced riffs, heavy breakdowns, plenty of double bass drumming, and a typical (yet extremely powerful) vocal style, make for some of the finer moments on the cd. Try not to listen to songs like "A Concept From Fire" or "Idea And Some Rope" and not feel some emotion or want to move. It's very hard. A Dozen Furies does a great job of perfecting a style of metal which is all too popular now adays, while still adding their own touch and flavor to it, which gives the album its own feel. There's 12 tracks (the first and last are an interlude and outro respectively), and every one is a worthwhile listening experience. For those of you who are familiar with their Ep, "Rip The Stars Down", a couple songs from there have found their way onto this cd, "Lost In A Fantasy" and "Push Away". It's hard for me to pick a favorite track on this record, but I'd have to say "The Everlasting Grudge" is definitely one of my most repeated songs. "An Idea and Some Rope" is a close second. From the first seconds of "Awake And Lifeless", to the last seconds of "138", I don't think you'll find yourself bored or wanting to skip tracks. The musicianship is top notch on the record. Guitars blend seemlessly together and make for some memorable riffs, while the rhythm section does more than an adequate job of backing the band. However the most surprsing aspect of A Dozen Furies has got to be Vocalist Bucky who gives one of the best performances a vocalist can give on this type of metal/hardcore release, ranging from tortured screams to beautiful melodies in a matter of seconds, while not overdoing either. Keeping a balance between the singing and screaming has always been an important aspect to me in the new breed of metalcore, and A Dozen Furies shows they know what they are doing. ADF just has a way of envoking you into their sound, which is extremely admirable, especially for a band this young. For fans of metal and hardcore this is a must buy. This is easily the best band to have appeared on Battle for Ozzfest, and it shows here (no wonder they won the competition.) Manntis delivered a standard metalcore release, and I have yet to hear Cynder's full length (it won't be out for sometime), but I'd be willing to bet that neither one will be able to outdo the giant known as "A Concept From Fire". A Dozen Furies took on the pressure, and answered the challenge of proving they were for real. I don't see how anyone could listen to this cd, and not know that these guys are serious about doing this. Do yourself a favor and pick up one of the stronger metalcore releases this year, and the best of the Battle For Ozzfest bands' cds that you will get your hands on. Check out the first single "The Cycle", playing on a Headbangers Ball or Uranium near you! |
