Book Description

April 1, 2006
Conception By Sarah McCarty An unwilling victim of an experiment gone wrong, mother to a child who shouldn't exist, Eden Lavery knows only one person strong enough to stand between the Coalition's fanatical quest for immortality and their threat to her daughter—Dusan Knight. Six-foot-three-inches of solid muscle, Deuce wears his power with the easy confidence that comes from six centuries of commanding the Chosen, the inspiration for vampire lore. But Deuce isn't just a source of legend. He's the man she loves. The man she had ultimately betrayed. From the moment Eden reenters his life, holding the miracle of a Chosen child in her arms, Deuce burns with the need to complete their joining. Everything about Eden, from her sassy sense of humor to her delectably stacked body, was made for him. But some things are easier decided than done. Amidst a race for survival, against an enemy that cannot be destroyed for fear of extinction, Deuce must fight for the future of his people, and to convince Eden the passion between them is more than illusion. She is his Chosen mate and nothing—not her fears, the Coalition, nor death itself—will take her away from him.

About the Author

Sarah has traveled extensively throughout her life, living in other cultures, sometimes in areas where electricity was a concept awaiting fruition and a book was an extreme luxury. While she could easily adjust to the lack of electricity, living without the comfort of a good book was intolerable. To fill the void, she bought pencil and paper and sketched out her own story. In the process, Sarah discovered the joy of writing.

Sarah writes what she loves to read; fast paced stories with vivid dialogue, intense emotion and well developed characters. Her attention to detail in her stories has earned her multiple awards and a reserved spot on Keeper shelves everywhere.

Sarah writes for Ellora's Cave, Harlequin HQN and Harlequin Spice

More About the Author

Hi all,

Is this cool or what? I am just loving the fact that Amazon is now letting authors correspond with their readers. While I have a very active yahoo group on which I participate daily, many of my print readers don't find their way there, and I miss the chance to chat with them. I'm a very big chatter and love to hear from readers, so this new option of Amazon's is simply wonderful.

I write big (130K) fast paced books and my intent is to grab your heart in the first paragraph and not let it go until the last sentence of the last page. In between, I want you to laugh, to cry and sometimes just flat out be breathless from the energy between the characters. To me, that's the challenge in writing a good story and every time I read a review or a comment that says I delivered that moment for a reader, my heart skips a beat and my inner muse leaps into the air with a resounding, "Yes!"

My first year published was a roller coaster ride of excitement. I released 4 books and received multiple reviewer choice awards, best of the year awards and also the CAPA for Best New Author Romance Erotic. 20 awards all told. I can't tell you how flattering and unexpected that was to someone who was completely thrilled just to have an audience for her stories.

I have three series at Ellora's Cave, all different, each with their own unique flavor. My Promise Series (Western Historical) is widely popular with readers of all genres and has been described as Deadwood (a wonderfully gritty HBO series) meets Romantica by readers. Probably not what you are conditioned to think of when you think Western historical, this series features the bad boys of the Old West who meet their matches in the unexpected women they meet in the most unexpected places. These alphas are men hardened by life with temperaments honed to a ruthless edge by their experiences, yet who still harbor a bone deep sense of honor that earns them the reward of the one woman who can tap into their heart. Each woman is as individual as the man she completes, but for a man who has never expected more than a violent end for doing the right thing in this life, they are a gift beyond price and there's nothing they won't do to keep them safe, happy and above all, theirs.

The Unchained series (Contemporary) explores the emotional journey of women shaking off the chains in their lives, whether those chains are emotional or physical. The men they meet along this journey of self-discovery are dominant, possessive, sexy, and tender. In other words, they're scorchers!! I love this series because even in the darkest moments, these characters can make me laugh through my tears. And the men, well, the men are just to die for because I couldn't give these courageous heroines anything less than their equals.

The OTHERS series is a blend of contemporary paranormal and suspense. It is a favorite of my heart because amidst the danger of extinction and the threat of civil war, there is also the huge complication of culture clash when The Chosen and The Others meet up with their mates who, when faced with that they must adapt to in order to be with the men who love them, are not necessarily thrilled with the choice fate has made for them. I love the energy between the pages of these stories, love the way the men come to the realization of the compromise they will have to make in their traditions in order to keep their mates, love the way they view their mates, but most of all, love the way the women come to realize their power and just how much they bring to the table in this seemingly unequal relationship. Love does not come easily to the heroes and heroines of these stories, but it does come, and when it arrives, it is the kind of love worth fighting for and keeping. Forever.

I think that's as much of an "about me and my books" as I can fit in here. Thanks so much for stopping by and I look forward to talking to each of you.

Best,

Sarah

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough info on The Others, May 9, 2006
This review is from: Conception (Paperback)
I really enjoy Sarah McCarthy's books --- her characters have so much depth and her use of language is lyrical. And while there's hot erotica, there's always a great plot, too. Ok...but Conception was downright weird. Like the first two intimate encounters between Eden and Dusan revolved around feeding, as in feeding via fellatio. Go ahead, call me a prude, but I'd have appreciated a bit more explanation for why in the world she "needed" that particular body fluid in quite such large quantities. Then there's the joining ring he slaps on her with zero warning or explanation. Given exactly where he pierced her with this thing, I expected some kind of strong (likely negative) reaction from her. Nope.

The book grabbed me from the first sentence, but left me hanging and wondering about this version of the Otherworld. It's a long book and I wonder if the editors cut out parts that would've explained some of the action more. It's obviously meant to begin a series and there's definitely lots to work with, I just hope more world-building and custom details are shared.

4.0 out of 5 stars Woohoo...hot vamps and more..., August 3, 2006
This review is from: Conception (Paperback)
Sarah McCarty has melded wonderful characters with a story line that is more original and more modern without being futuristic or "vamp hunter"ish.

Eden is both sensual and real. Though she is drawn by the chemestry of the "others", her mothering instincts are first and formost, as would be with (most)real life women. She will do anything, including giving up her mate (not to mention, placing herself in danger)to ensure the safety of her child. This adds a real depth to her character that I had not come across in my vamp reading.

Deuce is totally hot...and then some. But here is the kicker... he's a daddy. A real one, who will do anything to keep his child and her mother safe. As with Eden, this is another layer to the vamp's character. His feelings are tender and genuine, instead of the usual alpha-territorial norm.

The bad guys...bent on immortality will do anything in their power to get what they want. If you want action, hot sex, and vampires, this is a book for you. MEOW!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Chosen and Carpathians, June 11, 2006
By
M. Bock (Richmond, VA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Conception (Paperback)
Although the story line (wicked grandfather, medical experimentation) is different, anybody who has read Christine Feehan's Dark series will find that the Chosen are very much like Carpathians. When either finds their "mate", they bond w/ her, have the ability to read her thoughts, can take away her pain (while undergoing the conversion or otherwise), speak ritual binding words, are sexually "hot" , big, strong, and powerful. Among the Chosen, Deuce's brother is a legendary healer, again reminding me of Gregori (Dark Magic).

Because I really like Ms. Feehan's books, I also liked this one, enough to give it 4 stars although I debated between 3 and 4. Whereas I really have a good background on Carpathians (probably because I've read all of the Dark series), I felt I knew very little about the Chosen. Since this has got to be the beginning of a series, I hope that Ms. McCarty's future books will give us more detaits about both the Chosen and the Others.
