This review is from: On Concepts and Classifications of Musical Instruments (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology) (Paperback)
Either a textbook or a research monograph I suppose, depending on how you think about it. Either way, this is a clear, straightforward academic attack on the classification of musical instruments from around the world, from many different cultures, and with an eye towards a general formalism of classification.

I don't know the prior history of musical instrument taxonomy very well, but this book is quite readable and clear, with a system that works well. Particularly interesting to me were cases of very similar instruments that are used in very different ways by different groups of people.
