5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good text book.
As a university student who is in no way interested in physics, this was a pretty good text book. As the title says, it's conceptual, so it digs deep enough to be interesting and educational, but it leaves out the more complicated maths that are usually associated with physics. The chapters are easy to read and less dry than your average text. All in all, great text...

3.0 out of 5 stars Why?
I think this book is really well written...I first purchased it in ebook form only to discover that it was missing chapters. I then had to pay a ton more for this paperback...I'm giving it a low score only because of the price. I think it is ridiculous for publishers to force starving students like me to pay exorbitant costs for textbooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent understanding of Physics., February 6, 2011
This review is from: Conceptual Physics (11th Edition) (Hardcover)

Paul Hewitt is a great instructor in Physics.
I took his class in the mid-70's in San Francisco which was very enjoyable and he also published his own book at that time. Each book he publishes is well worth reading.

I would highly recommend if you don't know anything about Physics this is the book you want.

4.0 out of 5 stars Physics book not focused on math aspect of Physics, October 30, 2010

This book has lots of cartoons and great everyday examples of how physics applies to our lives. This is my first physics book to study with and I've enjoyed it so far. Hewitt doesn't seem to focus too much on the mathematics of physicis in this text. However, he does an exceptional job at explaining how the mathematic formulas are created and the concepts behind the formula's existence. If you want a textbook that's great at explaining ideas of physics to help you better understand why certain formulas in physicis, exist, this could be a great supplemental textbook for you or your students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concepts are Clear, Reading is Engaging, Examples are Fun, May 29, 2011

This book is widely used as a textbook for high school and college courses, but I also highly recommend it to students who are taking trig-based or calculus-based physics and want to better understand the concepts. The author obviously has excellent communication skills and thorough understanding of the concepts as the material is presented very clearly and precisely. Furthermore, it is presented in clear, plain language, not technical jargon. The book is written in a way that makes it very engaging. You can also sense the author's passion for conceptual physics, which is infectious. I have recommended this as supplemental reading to many students, and 100% of them have really enjoyed the book. Many of the examples, questions, and diagrams are intriguing and/or fun. If you are taking conceptual physics or physical science with a different textbook, you will probably be happy to have this textbook as a supplement. If you are taking trig-based or calculus-based physics and you're struggling, I also recommend this book to help you improve your conceptual understanding.

This book is great! It's well written, concise, easy to read and understand, and the additional info you can get by using the website associated with this book is awesome. I need it for my Physics class, but I'm going to keep it after I'm done with the class as it has a ton of valuable information in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to read and understand, but not good for classroom..., November 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Conceptual Physics (11th Edition) (Hardcover)

Conceptual Physics is a motivational textbook that grasps the attention of the student by using reader-friendly images and wording. By using simple analogies and providing ideas of easy hands-on projects at the end of each chapter, it achieves the purpose of helping students understand the "why" in Physics.

It is refreshing to read a Physics book that emphasizes a thorough understanding of the ideas it seeks to get across before pushing the students into "practice exercises" without them even understanding what they are doing.
