This book is a great resource for a good conceptual foundation in statistics. The authors are very clear- from beginning to end they show consistency and a logical flow in the concepts presented. Even though I had several years of exposure in graduate school to these concepts, this book allowed me to really understand the "why" (practice might give you the mechanics, i.e., the "how").

The authors also provide numerous websites from universities that are good resources if you want to go deeper on a concept. Sometimes the sites allow you to practice running simulations. This book is absolutely great if you are looking for conceptual clarity, but if you need exercises/applications, you should buy the Newman and Fraas (1979) workbook or another workbook.

Dr. I. Newman taught Graduate Statistics to my wife @ Akron back in the '70's. I also used this book to help understand and teach statistical concepts. This book is as easy to understand and relevant now as it was then. We buy a copy for each friend/relative who is taking a stat. course!
