The Wheel Keeps On Rolling,
By G. L. (Missouri) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In Concert (DVD)
First of all let me say that I've been a big fan of Asleep At The Wheel ever since I "discovered" them back in 1974. I've always been amazed at the sound this band has put out over the years and this DVD is no exception. At first I was hesitant to buy it because of the fact that it was recorded in Germany. For some reason I was afraid I would be disappointed in the quality of the audio and video. My fears were unfounded. Audio and video quality are excellent on this DVD. The performance by the band is top notch........as good or better than anytime I've seen them live in concert (six times so far and I'm not done yet!) I highly recommend this DVD!

Swing West - in Germany!,

Having experienced Asleep at the Wheel about five times now, I've seen their show evolve over the years. This Ohne Filter DVD captures Asleep at the Wheel at what I would describe as their climax. Long before the introduction of the cheesy Alamo songs or Ray Benson's corny crooner tunes, this is the best of the Asleep at the Wheel live songbook. The production is as good as it gets with the sound and video being tops. I'm with Amazon reviewer G. L. in that I was also concerned about the authenticity of a Western Swing concert recorded in Germany. One viewing ends such concerns. Unlike in the States, there are no Western hats in the audience, but the performance is the same as what the band played in Austin. Western Swing, Country, Rock and Roll, Western, Boogie-Woogie -it's all here. One of my Asleep at the Wheel live favorites has always been 'Hot Rod Lincoln.' Their studio version does the song no justice. Played live, they rock it out and I couldn't be more pleased that it made it to this disc. Recorded in Stuttgart on 4-26-00, the power of this DVD is ironic. In the land of durndels and leiterhosen, this is the best video capture of the band that at times single handedly kept the torch of Western Swing burning brightly - swing west in Germany!

I like Asleep at the Wheel-but this video was a bit boring to me. After a while, all the songs sound the same, I wish they would have injected a little more deversity. You have to be a die hard to go bannans for this video. Myself, it hardly is not worth the money spent.

I love Asleep At The Wheel. The musical value is very good. It is entertaining to watch the musicians but it is recorded in a small club in. Germany where the culture is a bit different than Texas (or anywhere in the U.S.) and it affects Ray Bensons performance. No regrets for the purchase but I'd like to see a bigger venue... maybe in Texas!!!
