Re-issue, PLEASE!!, March 18, 2008
This review is from: In Concert (Audio CD)
One must wonder why this recital is unavailable: an uncut live recording from Hannover from March 24, 1966, presenting virtually the same programme as the August 19, 1965, Salzburg recital (available on Orfeo), but in stereo! Both were originally radio broadcasts, this Myto disc from the NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk). And both Wunderlich and Giesen are having a hot night, too! I would be hard-pressed to say which of Wunderlich's four accounts of Schumann's Dichterliebe I prefer, but the combination of a relatively late live recording (experts agree Wunderlich interpretative qualities in this repertoire only continued to improve after his studio recording, even if I, for one, must say I simply love that, too - all four accounts!) plus good stereo sound would seem to tip the scale in favour of this one. Wunderlich seems more involved, Giesen plays as well as or better than ever (to me a - relative! - drawback of the Salzburg and Edinburgh recitals). Given equal sound quality, this might be seen as second to the Edinburgh recital (Wunderlich's last), at least as far as the natural flow of the singing is concerned, but since the original master tape there seems lost... But then, there is a wonderful, almost aggressive unanimity here that makes this account irreplaceable anyhow (a negligible stridency to Wunderlich's voice might be abetted by a new remastering - the source tape's sound quality appears quite phenomenal for a radio recording of the time, with spacious realism). Need I really go on? Have I mentioned the Beethoven and Schubert items all come off as well as we ever have the right to expect? For Pete's sake, someone re-reissue this, better soon!
Greetings from Switzerland, David.
