Krupa Still Swings!,
By Gertrude da Goat (New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In Concert (Audio CD)
This is an interesting live performance (released for the first time on this 1997 CD) that features veteran drummer Gene Krupa two years before his death. The recording quality is not the best but the Detroit band is pretty good (the up-and-coming trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, clarinetist Andy Mormile, trombonist Al Winters, pianist Eddie Metz and bassist Don Lewandowski) and there was still plenty of spirit, drive and excitement to Krupa's playing. The group performs six swing standards (including "Sugar," "A Smooth One" and a lengthy "Perdido") plus an odd opening version of "Hey Look Me Over." This small-label release casts some light on Krupa's little-known activities of his last few years. ~ Scott YanowRecording information: Detroit, MI (1971). Personnel: Gene Krupa (drums); Andy Mormile (clarinet); Marcus Belgrave (trumpet); Al Winters (trombone); Eddie Metz (piano). Liner Note Author: Bruce Klauber. |
