This review is from: The Jazz Collector Edition: Tony Bennett with Count Basie (Audio CD)
Delta/Laserlight is justifiably infamous for collections of really awful rock remakes, however their antique jazz and European orchestra classical CDs have great merit. JAZZ COLLECTOR EDITION - TONY BENNETT & COUNT BASIE (#15 722) is one of their better sets.No liner notes here, just a two page list of mostly classical CDs. D/LL's 700 series includes discs by Armstrong, Prima, Miller, Hines, James, Les Paul Trio, Waller, Brown, Jimmy Dorsey, Shaw, King Cole Trio, Ellington, Goodman, Herman, Getz, Rich, Fitzgerald, Gillespie & Vaughn. (Most of these aren't listed.) Despite artwork, the first ten of these aren't "live at the Vegas Hilton," they're stereo studio sides, purportedly from 11/19/58. Back cover notes say that Tony's arranger, Ralph Sharon, is on piano with Basie conducting, but it's clear the Count plays on "Jeepers Creepers" and others. (Highly doubtful Basie was involved with track #6.) Audio on these is very clean, with a typically tight COLUMBIA echo behind Tony. Selection #11 (from 10/16/58) features a Joe Williams vocal and Basie at the organ, backed by his All-Star unit. It's unprocessed mono. The last cut is lo-fi with murky tape head azimuth misalignment. The full band is heard on this top-selling late 1930s single. Every performance is top shelf. Highly recommended for Bennett and/or Basie aficionados. . Also available, JAZZ COLLECTOR EDITION - COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA, and a second Delta/Laserlight CD of the Basie ensemble. Nice Going Tony,
This review is from: In Concert - I Left My Heart in San Fran (Audio CD)
The covers a bit cheezy but the goods are in the package. Full backing Orchestra and Tony is in fine voice. I particularly enjoy his live record from 1962 at Carnagy Hall and was looking for more live material earlier than the last two decades. I'm guessing it's from the 70's but that's just a guess.
