Editorial Reviews

Deep Purple took to the road for many sell out shows of the Far East in 1976 and recorded what would become the final international album of their run with Warner Bros., Last Concert In Japan. Filled with blazing guitar licks from the late great Tommy Bolin, searing vocals from David Coverdale and an arena powered rhythm section courtesy of Deep Purple, the band opens the CD with the hugely popular "Burn." More powerful tracks like "Smoke On The Water" and "Highway Star" round out this super rare live disc that has never been released in the USA until now! First time ltd. ed. compact disc!

1. Burn
2. Love Child
3. You Keep On Movin
4. Wild Dogs
5. Lady Luck
6. Smoke On The Water
7. Soldier Of Fortune
8. Woman From Toyko
9. Highway Star

Biography

Deep Purple survived a seemingly endless series of lineup changes and a dramatic mid-career shift from grandiose progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal to emerge as a true institution of the British hard rock community; once credited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the globe's loudest band, their revolving-door roster launched the careers of performers including Ritchie ... I bought this on vinyl in 1982. I was excited to hear it as I had seen this tour when it passed through Washington D.C. before I had heard Bolin play on Billy Cobham's Spectrum. It was the only live document of Purple with Bolin at the time. What a disappointment. I don't think this was much more than a final shot to capitalize on the Deep Purple brand. Seems to have been edited and mixed haphazardly. Bolin's playing is below par, especially on the Purple classics. If Purple had not had such a huge back catalog, this band could have survived on the new material. While an extremely talented guitarist, Bolin was not a good replacement for Blackmore. Anyway, the Tommy Bolin archives released the entire concert remixed some years ago re-titled "This Time Around." It sounds and flows better, but is still nothing to write home about. The King Biscuit set is the definitive live set from this line up.

As the other reviewer indicates, if you want the properly recorded and edited Japan show, you want "This Time Around: Live In Japan". That double disc is leaps and bounds better than this sorry compilation. Don't make the mistake of getting "Last Concert In Japan". You'll regret it.

I first bought this album and I liked it. But for me this is too short for a live album.
So I read the reviews, some customers mentioned "This time around - Live in tokyo" is better compared to this album.
So I searched it and bought it also.
So now I owned both copies.
This one and the "This time around live in tokyo album".

While the claim is that this release is being released for the first time in US, the truth is the Tommy Bolin Archives released the full Japan concert back around 2000. Titled This Time Around, Live in Japan 1975, it was a 2 cd, 2 hour show from the infamous concert in which Bolin supposedly slept on his arm the wrong way (wink wink) a few nights before the show. The band hadn't yet clicked on tour at this point and it shows. Songs like Burn, Smoke, Highway Star sound tiring, while the newer songs like Gettin' Tighter (while not on this release) You Keep on Moving, Lady Luck the band perform with enthusiasm. The absolute highlight(s) of the show we're Tommy Bolin's Wild Dogs, and the song Drifter (not on this release) caught fire. This release is purely for the purist who want everything DP on CD to either match or replace their LP's. For those curious about the Tommy Bolin led Deep Purple live in concert, this release nor This Time Around will win you over. Check out Deep Purple In Concert (courtesy of King Biscuit) Long Beach 1976 for a fiery show. While most of the same material is performed, it's more excitably performed, and Tommy Bolin shows off his true guitar genius throughout.
