This DVD is probably the only way you can see what Johnnie Ray was in the fifties. His vocals are strong in this production, his stage presence high, his manner unaffected. His song selection goes from the pop tunes "Walking in the Rain" to selections from Gershwin. He is confident, at ease and instills his songs with emotion and grace.
Recommended for fans and people curious to know what his stage manner was. Bob Dylan says Johnnie Ray affected him deeply, and you can hear that in his early music. The production is quiet crisp and clear, marred only by a short, five second video flaw of transmission (the sound is not affected). It's unlikely there would ever be another whole concert of this man's available.

I absolutely love this DVD, as I never got to see Johnnie Ray perform in his heyday. We are so lucky that they were able to capture this concert on film, though in B&W and a little fuzzy. Actually watching Johnnie perform some of his best songs is so much better than just listening to the CDs. I just wish it were longer, as I could have watched for hours. Thank you for making this available!

Johnnie Ray was the greatest showman of the fifties as far as music is concerned. He influenced many artists including Elvis, and The Beatles. He was never given the credit he deserved. He lived a hard life and was taken much too soon. This DVD is excellent. The sound is very clear, and the picture is pretty good for a fifties film. The bonus selections were the highlight for me. I think it was an awards show that came out in the seventies because I remember seeing it on TV, but I'm sure they did not show the whole segment. The only song I remember seeing is "Cry". It is great seeing the three songs here for the first time, and in color. I'm sure this was a night Johnnie never forgot for the rest of his life. The audience seemed to really love him and his music. I'm sure it must have touched him to have this great a response this late in his life. This bonus section alone is worth the price. If you love Jonnie Ray you must get this DVD.

Johnnie Ray's music was popular to play at the high school dances when I was growing up. I was always so proud of him to be a guy from my hometown who made it big. He used to sing on that old show "Stars of Tomorrow" that was a local talent show in Portland, Or. Go Johnnie if you are still out there. I dig your fun songs like "Little White Cloud that Cried". I keep thinking I met you once when I used to work at Newberrie's five and dime years ago. I always thought you were a nice person.

Johnnie Ray - In Concert (PAL) (DVD)
When I ordered this item I wondered if I was wasting my money. I am pleased to say that I did not. Upon receiving the DVD I held my breath in anticipation: will it be a good quality? Will it be good sound? Will it even be the real Johnnie Ray? Yes on all accounts. In the first few minutes I was overwhelmed with emotion. I cried from joy through the first viewing & had to immediately watch it again. The `Bonus' at the end was an extra special treat. Likely no one under 50 will even know who Johnnie Ray is, go into a record store & ask for Johnnie Ray & they look at you quizzically. I would like to submit that every aspiring singer today needs to look at this man's performances - I would liken it to taking a Master Class in song phrasing & delivery. No one before & no one since has EVER performed a song the way he did. Youngsters may look at him now & find him `corny' - well, they have a thing or two to learn. Johnnie Ray had a unique talent & make no mistake - his talent was to make you feel every word of a song right down to your toes; you just knew that this man was not simply singing a song, he was feeling every single word that came out of his mouth & making you feel it too. Phrasing & delivery is everything to a singer & Johnnie Ray should be held up as the gold standard in this regard. I applaud & gratefully thank the people who made this DVD available, including AVRO Television (Holland). As far as I know it is the only Johnnie Ray performance available on DVD. It is now my most treasured possession! |
