Amazon must have cleaned out their storage closets recently because dozens of previously out-of-print classical CDs have been popping up all over the place as new and available. Take this classic collection of late-1950s stereo performances of Russian Orchestral Masterworks conducted by William Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Much of this material has been available before in earlier EMI series, but most are now out of print. (The very same "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Polovtsian Dances" are still available on the original EMI Seraphim featuring Kubelik's Borodin Symphony No. 2.) Steinberg's performances, like those by Bernstein, Ormandy and Cluytens (see my reviews of the latter two), show you don't have to be Russian to play great Russian music well. If you are looking for an outstanding Russian collection, snap this one up before it vanishes again!
