A fun Recital, June 6, 2003
This review is from: In Concert [VHS] (VHS Tape)
For me personally it doesn't get any better. Jose Carreras is my hero and he hams it up in this recital. Unfortunatly this is 1987 which is a tad bit late on his vocal ticker. His high notes are shoved, but not foggy in the least. Those who are accostomed to his three tenors warbling will find a relativley consistant vibrato.
Im not sure I can reccomend this video to someone seeing Carreras for the first time. There is no lyricism in the voice and the tone is hard a times. The high notes are thrilling but no one could call them beautifull. 8 years of dramatic roles like Carmen, Chenier, Aida, Paliacci, Giocondo, Trovatore ect.. had by this time taken the flexibility out of his voice. This concert sees him straining the last bit of viable operatic voice out of his layrnx.
Despite this Carreras manages to thouoghly entertain. His expression and pinash with interpretation will have you captivated in each song. Expexially worthy of note is his "Mattinata" where he keeps it together for the optional B in the final phrase.
When it comes to Carreras if you are looking foor him as a great dramatic tenor, check out his Turandot or his Chenier in 1983 and 85 respectively. Unfortunatley not much of the lyric stuff that makees him the tenor of a lifetime is available on Vhs. His Met Boheme is forced to say the least and his I lombardi may fail to impress. If you ever find any pre 1980 carreras grab it before its too late, he was the tenor of the century then!

very good, September 25, 2005

This recital is very interesting. Even if Carreras spits a lot while singing. Lights and angle of camera, I suppose. There is something quite intimate in this recital. Amateurs should buy, just to listen to and see the great Master performing.
