These recordings show Martinu at his best. Aside from the Memorial to Lidice, this recording features concerti in a neo-baroque style. The two concerti for piano trio and string orchestra are particularly splendid, featuring vigorous, unconventional counterpoint, oddly shifting harmonies and infectious melodies in their outer movements. The slow movements also have a neo-baroque feel, one reminiscent of the infinity unwinding melodies of the slow movements of the 2nd or 5th Brandenburg Concerti, the other bringing to mind the slow movement of the 1st Brandenburg concerto. The sound is excellent and Conlon and his soloists do a wonderful job.

I think the concertinos of Martinu are better than the larger concertos. Martinu thrived on complexity. Having more than one instrument play against the orchestra inspired him. That is why Martinu's five piano concertos are not as appealing as the concerto for two pianos. These two small concertinos are successful because three instruments are pitted against the orchestra. This is an important element of his neo-classical works.
