5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets - live or not...
Mariza is, easily and almost cliched at this point, as good as it gets on the planet... Fado is in her blood and you feel like she's about to open a vein in live performances.

There have been negative reviews about the compatability of this CD with some MP3 players - which sadly looks like a poor review for the performance... PLEASE, if you are a Fado fanatic...

3.0 out of 5 stars The DVD is worth the price of admission
I'm a fado traditionalist; this art form is best enjoyed in small intimate settings, accompanied by Portuguese and Spanish guitars. The live concert CD is OK, but it's big, orchestral fado, and not what I was expecting.

However, the documentary on the accompanying DVD is spellbinding. It's a wonderful history of fado, punctuated with performances by Mariza...

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, July 15, 2007

This review is from: Mariza: Concerto Em Lisboa (DVD)
I've watched both the Lisbon and the London DVDs and Mariza's passion for Portugal, Lisbon and fado come outs strong in both DVDs. However, performing next to the beautiful Tower of Belem adds authenticity to the performance that cannot be duplicated. This might be stating the obvious since the performance is in Portugal, but there is no English in this DVD, so if that is something important, one might be disappointed. I only speak English and had no issues with this. Her voice is magnificent, she is humble and charming. I adore her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Portuguese fados - nice CD + DVD set, April 7, 2007
The concert CD is lovely, with Mariza soaring over a band led by Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum (known for his recent live work with Caetano Veloso...) They work through a variety of fado styles, from the weepiest love songs to giddy folk dances, each style performed with good humor and power.

The added bonus documentary film DVD is a real treat, not only for the glimpses of Mariza and other contemporary fado stars, but for its look back at the roots of the genre and its meaning to Portuguese society. Particularly interesting is its examination of fado's political and social significance -- originally the fado was type of left-wing protest song, but it was subverted in the 1930s by the dictatorship that ruled Portugal until the mid-1970s. The junta made fado music into a propaganda tool, emphasizing romantic love and family values, to the exclusion of older themes about hard work and hard times. After the dictatorship toppled, fado fell into disrepute, but regained popularity in the 1980s and '90s when a new generation cast about for a way to guard Portuguese culture from the encroachments of globalized (American) popular entertainment. A fascinating story, laced with many soulful performances.

I had heard of Mariza by chance from a fellow fan of Amalia Rodrigues and rented the DVD of the Lisboa concert. That was it, I was hooked and had to have this music. Mariza is not "the new Amalia", she is Mariza, and she is a great fado singer in her own right. I have listened to nothing but this CD for the past 2 or 3 weeks...Mariza is addictive! The music is so emotional & moving and you don't have to speak Portuguese to love it. Also, the bonus CD (which is in English) has a lot of good information about the history of fado, and good ambience footage of Lisbon. An excellent buy.

My daughter caught Mariza on the Letterman Show. I have purchased this package. I do not speak the language, had never heard of "Fado" but let me tell you, after having viewed the DVD, and listened to Mariza, I am totally in love with the music and Mariza's voice. Such expression, such passion. How wonderful it is to learn about a new kind of music. It truly is the Universal language! One may not know the language, but you can certainly feel the passion, whether it be joy or sadness. Oh! I just love this CD. I hope Mariza tours the US, especially VA Beach, VA!

4.0 out of 5 stars "Concerto Em Lisboa ... Mariza Reis Nuneswas ... Silva Screen Records (2007)", February 27, 2007
This review is from: Mariza: Concerto Em Lisboa (DVD)
Silva Screen Records presents "Mariza: Concerto Em Lisboa" --- featuring Mariza Reis Nuneswas the artist who performed at Live 8; she sang at the Eden Project in Cornwall. Since that time, Mariza has been invited to a large number of concerts and events to promote Portuguese culture around the whole world, from Australia to Finland, the United States and Argentina ... Mariza is considered as a more contemporary follower of Amália Rodrigues ... growing up, and until she became a fado singer, Mariza sang in a wide variety of styles, including gospel, soul and jazz ... released in 2001, Mariza's first album, "Fado em Mim", was an instant success in Portugal, selling more than 30,000 copies. This led to her recording company launching the disc internationally and taking advantage of the good reception that Portuguese music was enjoying at the time in Europe and in other countries, such as Mexico and Japan ... at the 2002 FIFA World Cup she performed the Portuguese national anthem at the game which pitted the home team (South Korea) against Portugal ... then came Mariza's second album, "Fado Curvo", was released in 2003, she was already considered as one of the best singers of what some call the new Fado movement. Mariza's voice, which harks back to the grand divas of the musical form, like the eternal Amalia Rodrigues, and her impassioned interpretations of Fado standards brought her great international recognition in a short amount of time, leading to her being the recipient, in March 2003, of BBC Radio 3's award for Best European Artist in World Music ... with her third album, "Transparente", was recorded in Brazil and released in 2005.

Mariza Reis Nunes (pron. IPA: [m.'i.z]/) (born December 16, 1973 in Mozambique) is a fado singer, moved to Portugal when she was three, and was raised in one of the most traditional quarters of Lisbon, Mouraria - Alfama, where she learned how to sing fado ... she has a Portuguese father but her mother hails from Mozambique (the song "Transparente" is a tribute to her African grandmother) ... for the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 she sang a duet with Sting in the song A thousand years, released on the official pop album of the Athens Olympics, Unity, on which fado is sung in English and Portuguese. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

DISCOGRAPHY:

2. Fado Curvo (2003)
3. Live in London (2005) DVD
4. Transparente (2005)
5. Concerto em Lisboa (2006) DVD and CD

Great job Silva Screen Records.presentation is flawless, with blends of immortal performances ... this latest release of her live CD and DVD, will capture the hearts of more American fans ... surrounded by legions of Portuguese fans, and buoyed by her country's longstanding tradition of discovery and exploration, Mariza looks forward while looking back, creating a new form of fado, while respecting what came before.

This is absolutely THE best Mariza!.... not just because of her voice and animation but because of the DVD which gives an amazing and entertaining history of Fado. Seeing her entertaining an audience has stayed with me and I 'replay' it in my mind when ever I go to another CD of hers. So interesting to hear how an audience in Portugal responds with so much respect for the performer and her presentation... falling into appreciative silence as she begins to sing. This woman doesn't just sing... she gives me hope and happy. So 'UP'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money, April 2, 2007
This is an excellent package...this is Mariza at her best..her vocals are emotional and captivating, and the bonus DVD documentary about the Story of Fado is so very informative and entertaining at the same time, including not only live footage of Mariza and her contemporaries, but also rare live footage of the doyenne of the genre, Amalia Rodrigues. That said, I am particularly peeved by the comments of your reviewer, D.Parr "dtakoma" who says that the CD could not be downloaded on his MP3 player and calls it a "crime". Mr. Parr, I just downloaded my CD onto my "IPod" with no trouble at all. Perhaps your player is faulty, or you may have an import copy from Europe or a "bootleg"? The true "crime" is in misleading people!!!
