5.0 out of 5 stars Voice of an angel
Connie Stevens was a film actress. Few people knows she was also a singer. This album shows Connie on jazz standards, singing with a voice that reminds of the gorgeous Beverly Kenney and Joanie Sommers. Don`t you believe? Buy the disc. It's delicious!
Her baby-voiced performances are a pearl lost in American records from the fifties. Rock`n`roll and British sounds...

COME ON WARNER BROS OR WHOEVER HAS THE RIGHTS TO HER SONGS..THIS IS THE GAL WHO HAD SUCH HITS AS "SIXTEEN REASONS", "MR. SONGWRITER", "LOST IN WONDERLAND"AND "WHY'D YOU WANNA MAKE ME CRY FOR".I HAD TO PAY BIG BUCKS FOR A JAPANESE IMPORT RECORD VINYL LP JUST SO I COULD HAVE THESE SONGS.I MEAN WHAT'S WRONG WITH OUR COUNTRY THAT WE HAVE TO PAY FOREIGN COUNTRIES BIG MONEY FOR OUR MUSIC. I MUST ADMIT THAT THEY DID DO AN EXCELLENT JOB QUALITY-WISE. IT'S TIME THAT CONNIE'S BIG HITS MADE IT TO C.D. SHALL WE WORK AS A TEAM AND WRITE TO WARNER BROTHERS RECORDS OR PERHAPS THEY CAN TELL US WHO HAS THESE MASTERS AND THE RIGHTS!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Connie Steven's best., June 26, 2002

Connie Stevens' voice conveys such a sense of joy, energy, and assessibility, that a person would have to be comatose not to be charmed by her. That's why I have to regret saying this album is not all that I hoped it would be. There are three or four standards that are enjoyable. But there are too many dated arrangements to make this album one that I could heartilty recommend. If I had to choose her best CD, it would be the one entitled "From Me to You."

Her baby-voiced performances are a pearl lost in American records from the fifties. Rock`n`roll and British sounds silent her. Now, in laser era, we can hear her again and know how she was better than almost the female singers from those years.
By the way, where is she now?

I love to hear Connie Stevens sing; her exquisite voice makes everything she sings sound beautiful! Indeed, when you hear her sing it's no wonder that she was the very first artist to get a recording contract at what was then the brand new Warner Brothers record label--they must have been running to sign her! "Conchetta" was actually her very first album; and that may at least partly explain why even though this is a good CD not all of her best songs are here. It's interesting to note that Concetta (spelled without the "h") was Connie's real name; and the quality of the sound on this CD is very good.

"Blame it on My Youth" starts the track set with Connie's voice massaging all the lyrics; the musical accompaniment enhances the number even more. "They All Laughed" is another good tune that shines bright in Connie's capable hands; and the male backup singers harmonize very well--not that Connie ever really needed backup singers but they do sound very good. "Looking for a Boy" has Connie in her natural environment as a songbird (although she could act, direct and start her own cosmetic company as well); and Judy Garland would surely approve of Connie's rendition of "The Trolley Song." Connie and the musicians use a creative arrangement so that Connie can put her own stamp on "The Trolley Song." In addition, "Polka Dots & Moonbeams" sounds just great when Connie sings it--she was born to sing great pop like this!

"It's a Lovely Day Tomorrow" features Connie squarely front and center as she performs this faultlessly; and I also like the lovely "Why to Change Me Now?" "Hit the Road to Dreamland" has Connie doing great justice to a Harold Arlen tune; and "I Know Why" has yet more of that very special voice I love so much. Connie does a particularly fine job singing "On a Slow Boat to China;" she makes it especially romantic with her sensitive delivery. "Too Young" by Sidney Lippman and Sylvia Dee is another cover that Connie aces as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing; and the album closes with Connie Stevens performing "Spring Is Here." It all leaves me wanting more!

Sure, Connie Stevens fans have a point when they say that some of her bets hits simply aren't here; but then again what we do get is nothing less than classic pop songs all performed brilliantly by Connie Stevens. I recommend this CD for her fans; and newcomers to her artistry will also appreciate this album.

Her 1st album released before her popularity on Hawaiian Eye but still reminiscent of her grace and style. Good choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why try to change her now?, January 12, 2003

Connie Stevens was a successful TV and movie star who later found a smidgen of fame in the recording business, but today most nostalgia-buffs and pop lovers have forgotten her and that's a shame. Her biggest hit, "Sixteen Reasons", isn't here, but there are some delightful interpretations of fine songs, like "It's A Lovely Day Today" and "Slow Boat To China." Connie's voice has limited range, but why try to change what so obviously works. My only complaint echoes the previous gentleman's: no bonus tracks? most of these songs are 3 minutes or less, which would've given Collector's Choice ample room to toss on some rare goodies. It doesn't hurt to give the listener a little thank you. Otherwise, B+

3.0 out of 5 stars This is Connie...before "Hawaiian Eye", June 19, 2001

About 15 years ago, I bought the original LP at a collectible record shop after reading an old Variety review. This was one of Warner Brothers' first LP releases (in 1958), showcasing the talent of a young vocalist (still in her late teens), whose career would take off big a year later...thanks to "Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)" and, of course, "Hawaiian Eye."

Connie shines on standards such as "Trolley Song," "Blame It on My Youth," "Too Young," and so on, with just-right backing by a small jazz combo with male voices.

When I read the liner notes of the CD reissue, I was a bit upset to find that Hal Hidey is not credited for his top-flight arrangements and conducting - yes, he's the same gentleman who wrote wonderful game show themes such as "Joker's Wild" and "Tic Tac Dough." If you have the original LP, you'll find his name on the label.

This album is a great discovery for fans of this wonderful lady who is just as lovely today as she was 40-some years ago!!!
