Three new reference books stand ready to be mined by young researchers. The Concise Children's Encyclopedia provides a rich core of information on such topics as continents, religions, science and technology, sports and the arts. The paper-over-board volume's compact size, bold graphics and brief chunks of text lend appeal. Sidebars offer additional information as well as topics for further research.

Grade 3-8-This compact volume holds tremendous visual appeal while offering the basics on hundreds of broad topics, from "Africa" to "Zoology." Though the introduction's claim to cover "all the topics that children explore at home and at school" is somewhat exaggerated, this encyclopedia does contain an astonishing amount of information. Excellent use is made of diagrams, color illustrations, photographs, and informative captions to achieve this effect, and text is broken up into manageable chunks. Each entry gives from one to four pages of coverage with good cross-referencing, and an eight-page index completes the volume. Tables at the back include state populations and U.S. presidents. Because of the scope, some popular encyclopedia topics (such as detailed state and country information) are not covered. While this work may be of limited use to libraries, it would make an excellent ready-reference book for home collections.
