5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading for all lovers of language
This little book was given to me by a blogger friend from Scotland who shares my love of words and language. Though reading is not exactly like being in Scotland, it sure does give you a feel for its mood and texture. The mood of the language, to my surprise,is far from the dour and conservative one I expected. The language is full of joyful, playful, and clever...

3.0 out of 5 stars Handy little book
This is an adoreable little book (it can fit in your back pocket). My parents are from Scotland and even though I was born here I have heard many of these words/phrases on a daily basis. I really like the way the book uses the word in a sentence as an example after defining the word. It had me giggling several times. It is a quick read and there are certainly numerous...

This little book was given to me by a blogger friend from Scotland who shares my love of words and language. Though reading is not exactly like being in Scotland, it sure does give you a feel for its mood and texture. The mood of the language, to my surprise,is far from the dour and conservative one I expected. The language is full of joyful, playful, and clever expressions. The author has compiled hundreds of words and phrases with brief definitions and examples of how they are used in everyday Scottish speech. She also provides a good deal of etymological detail, and it was surprising to learn how many languages have contributed to the Scottish vocabulary. Her many citations from Burns were an added treat! It's the perfect book for a train ride, a picnic, or a day at the beach.

This is an adoreable little book (it can fit in your back pocket). My parents are from Scotland and even though I was born here I have heard many of these words/phrases on a daily basis. I really like the way the book uses the word in a sentence as an example after defining the word. It had me giggling several times. It is a quick read and there are certainly numerous more scottish slang words that my mom felt should have been included, but for the basics it serves it's purpose.

Ordered this book on the advice of my Glasgow pals. Couldn't be happier I took their advice. Great find, which arrived well packaged and in ample time.
