Book Description

On its first appearance in 1960, J.O. Urmson's Concise encyclopedia of Western philosophy and philosophers established itself as a classic. Its contributors included many of the leading philosophers of the English-speaking world: Ryle, Hare, Strawson, Ayer, Dummett, Williams and many others. They wrote with an authority and individuality which made the Encyclopedia into a lively and engaging introduction to philosophy as well as a convenient reference work.
For this edition, supervised by Jonathan Rée, the original articles have been revised and updated, and eighty articles by thirty one new authors have been added. The additions take account of recent developments in philosophy, of literary, historical and political issues in philosophy, and of developments in continental thought, including in Marxism, psychoanalysis, phenomenology, existentialism, structuralism, post-structuralism and deconstruction. There is a clear, integral cross-referencing system which allows the reader to identify points of overlap between philosophical traditions and their personalities at a glance.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the PhiLOSTophers., June 9, 2000

This review is from: The Concise Encyclopedia of Western Philosophy and Philosophers (Paperback)
This book was first published in 1960 and later completely revised in 1989, my version is a reprint from 1992.

As the title says it's a Concise Encyclopedia, it is about 330 pages so the entrys are short, but they are good, reasonably clear and to the point.

I used this book a lot when studying Philosophy, the good thing about this Encyclopedia is that not only does it cover Philosophical terms but also Philosophers and their main theories, and it is Cross referenced with Bold type.

So it's a good basic Encyclopedia, And it worked well for me and continues to do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise but clear coverage of Western philosophy, November 9, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is one of the best enclopedias of Western philosophy. I am conversant with quite a few of them, having to use them as part of my thirty-plus years of teaching philosophy. A typical encyclopedia of Western philosophy is narrowly prejudiced toward one or the other aspect of Western philosophy. It also is couched in vague phraseology. But this one stands out in its impartiality, truly synoptic coverage, clarity and concise analysis. It covers just enough topics and treats them very forthrightly. Selected philosophers themselves write about the topics and the selection is generally superb. No padding. Also no big misses. You can even read selected major articles and get a great review of what you are after in your philosophical pursuits. The book is handy enough to carrry around. The new edition is updated and serves its purpose just right. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars The role of categorics, September 8, 2009
Philosophy is an apt topic of concision, nonetheless covering areas eclectic to expertise

I intend to write my own encyclopedia on the subject of philosophical paedism

|| Symbolism, Linguistics, Sidereality, and Acoletics|| may be available in some form in the next two years, one of the only volumes available in considering categoric knowledge alone (ala Kant)

256 pages cover topics ranging from Space-Time to Archana in a form of recundite categorics
