This review is from: A Concise History of American Policing (Kindle Edition)
Many occupations track from befoe the heady days of "Civis Romanus Sum" and A Concise History of American Policing travels this distance with comfort and style. We may have bagged certain occupations such as fighting to the death in the arena or slaving at the oars of a Roman galley, but since police work deals with people there's a continuum of practicality that makes this read a worthwhile journey.

Raymond Foster has more than a Los Angeles Police Force Lieutenant's grasp of police work. He brings to the table a rich heritage of personal police involvement and keen academic study. His dad was a cop before him.

This book delivers a most readable and polished sequence of policing through history. It is filled with highlighting and back-grounding - why we are - where we are - doing what we do - with whom - and with what.

The advents of technological advance have brought great change. However, good police work is good police work. This redundancy will continue as experience, gut feel and an officers 6th sense play key roles in maintaining order in societies. So it has been and so it is today.

As always, those whose responsibility it is to respond first to adverse variances where groups of people are involved are most often taken for granted when society's machine runs smoothly. These are the men and women who stand between us and man-made and nature's-created disasters. How spoiled we are to take their dedication so for granted.

For those interested in police work, historic progressions and comfortably conveyed fact-based information, this is a work you will enjoy. It is well told, nicely researched, and timely.
