Book Description

April 16, 2007 0195422074 978-0195422078
Ideal for a one-semester course, this new text--based on the two-volume introduction published in 2001 and edited by Willard G. Oxtoby--covers the major world religions, addressing their significance in today's society and culture and also in historical perspective. Each chapter is written by an esteemed scholar and covers a different tradition, focusing on six areas: the origins of the movement; the crystallization of its teachings; its major divisions in regional and historical perspective; the practices of the tradition's adherents and religious specialists; its influences on society, literature, and the arts; and the modern-day intellectual, social, and technological challenges it faces.
Each chapter is structured in the same format--in order to facilitate comparative analysis--opening with a "Tradition at a Glance" feature that provides basic details about the tradition in outline form. Sidebar features include sayings of the founder or other figures, biographical sketches of major historical and modern thinkers, and illustrations of important symbolism and iconography. A glossary, tables of basic facts, maps, timelines, lists of key geographical sites, questions, and further readings are also included.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Textbook and Introduction, August 17, 2011
This review is from: A Concise Introduction to World Religions (Paperback)
I have taught introductory courses in world religions for almost 15 years. This book is excellent, and I've used it in many of my courses. This book takes the two-volume World Religions text edited by the late Professor Will Oxtoby, and both condenses it into one volume and updates it. There is a new second edition of this book that was edited by Professor Alan Segal shortly before his death, and Amazon shows that edition as being available in December 2011.
I have not been able to find another single volume that does what this book does. It introduces students to the major religious traditions of the world, and does so in manageable chapters of about 60 pages each. Unlike other books, it doesn't skimp on the details, and provides all of the important information (people, places, texts, dates, etc. that are important to each religion) that students need to properly understand the world's religions. The authors of each chapter are recognized authorities on the religions that they write about (full disclosure, I'm the co-author, along with Mahmoud Ayoub, of the chapter on Islam), and all of them are excellent teachers. There are many illustrations, splash pages, text boxes, and different colours used to make the book visually appealing. This is an outstanding introduction to the religions of the world and my students love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, July 9, 2009

This review is from: A Concise Introduction to World Religions (Paperback)
This was definitely a VERY informative book. However, some of the text was hard to understand. It just took a little more in depth reading to figure out but overall I was very satisfied. It taught my a lot about religions, and I'd recommend it as a college course textbook.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Survey Text, May 24, 2008
This review is from: A Concise Introduction to World Religions (Paperback)
I used this text for an undergrad world religions course and found it very informative. There is obviously some bias, especially in the Christianity section, but it served its purposes well. I was not pleased with the organization of each chapter and found the information was presented in a chaotic fashion, requiring the reader to piece together different parts of the chapter to understand singular concepts. The book is very well indexed and footnoted. I also think the text was very readable so if someone was looking for a book to do self-study on world faiths, this is a decent place to start.
