Food for the mind and heart, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Conclave: A Journal of Character: Conclave Journal (Paperback)
This is what I would like to call a journal that appeals to the intellect and to the heart with a collection of works that goes from poignant photos full of meaning (and character) to various forms of story telling--flash, short stories and even a personal favorite of mine--drama/plays.
While growing up, my parents subscribed to a magazine, quite thick, that came out once in two months or so. I don't recall its name now, but it came from Europe and it was, just like Conclave, a collection of stories of fiction, non-fiction, little historical pieces, photos, even cartoons. It was a great source of joy for me every time it arrived; I would spend hours and days absorbed by it. It, together with most such magazines, has disappeared a long time ago. And then, came Conclave. I picked it up out of nostalgia, but I got quickly engrossed by it. These are stories that do not pull punches. They cover a range of subjects and a spectrum of issues.
It's indeed for the mind and heart.
Oh, and did I mention that there is some great writing and photography in there?

Conclave: A Journal Of Character - 2008, May 14, 2009
This review is from: Conclave: A Journal of Character: Conclave Journal (Paperback)
CONCLAVE: A JOURNAL OF CHARACTER is a literary magazine focusing on character-based writing and photography. Nominally published once a year, this inaugural issue contains previously unpublished fiction, flash-fiction, poetry, drama, prose poems, creative non-fiction, essays, and photography, all character driven.
CONCLAVE celebrates memorable characters, the kind that get under your skin. To me, a good character feels real, like they might live down the street. You might begin thinking of them as a friend, or even as a part of yourself. You can see the world through their eyes and experience their emotions. A great character grows and changes as they encounter new and different situations; they are not stagnant, but rather continually evolve.
In CONCLAVE, you will find many such strong, exceptional characters. My personal favorite piece comes from the drama section and is entitled "A Couple of Boobs." This poignant, moving play and its characters really touched me. And there are many other fine examples of equally outstanding characters and writing within the pages of CONCLAVE, as well as beautiful photographs which each capture a unique spirit.
CONCLAVE is HIGHTLY RECOMMENDED.
