The poems heard round the world,
By
This review is from: The Concord Hymn and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions) (Paperback)
While our own history may view him as a Transcendental philosopher, Emerson himself said "I am a born poet". There are some remarkable poems here, some very accessible like "The Humblebee" (Insect lover of the sun, / Joy of thy dominion! / Sailor of the atmosphere, / Swimmer through the waves of air"). There are also some Hindu influences works like Hamatreya, Brahma and Maia ("Illusion works impenetrable/ Weaving webs innumerable") . The Concord Hymn includes the famous line about the American Revolution "And fired the shot heard round the world". The elegy to his son Waldo "the wondrous child" is the most touching and personal work in this collection.
