Book Description

November 15, 2006

On January 21, 1976, the date of Concorde's first commercial flight, Air France and British Airways took air transport into the supersonic era. Suddenly, travelers could fly in luxury across the Atlantic in a matter of a few hours and faster than the speed of sound. This book provides an account of a prodigious aeronautical enterprise and of the technical and human exploits needed to ensure that this extraordinary aircraft, the outcome of exemplary European cooperation, saw the light of day. Photos of the iconic plane's exteriors, engineering, specs, interiors, details - even an oversized photo of the place setting served in first class - are reproduced on the highest quality paper to pay tribute to the plane synonymous with speed, luxury, and style. A must-have collectible edition for anyone who flew on the Concorde or for any serious civil aviation enthusiast's library.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In Flight USA, January 2007

“This work might be the most impressive single aviation book of the year … The work has incredible shots of the luxurious interior, and the authors manage to squeeze a lot of drama out of the history of this craft that seemed more science fiction than science fact.”

Airliners, March/April 2007

“This new book by Frederic Beniada and Michel Fraile mixes an eye-pleasing collection of super Concorde imagery with a fascinating historical text. A work of art in its own right, the large format book is truly dazzling …  In a word, this book, like its namesake, is magnifique!”

Wings & Airpower, April 2007

“One of the most mind-blowing new books ever to cross our desks here at Wings & Airpower. To say the photography contained in this new book on one of the greatest airplanes ever built is stunning and revolutionary would be like saying Elvis was a singer. For anyone who has seen the great bird in the air, taking off, or landing, the photos will put you right there next to the runway ... This magnificent new book pays apt tribute to both the men and machine.”

Aviation History, July 2007

“For me as well as many other aviation enthusiasts, it was a sad but inevitable day when these beautiful aircraft were taken out of service in 2003 because they didn’t pay their way. Perhaps it was also inevitable that a super-size book would be published to venerate the Concorde era. Concorde features 150 stunning photos of the airliner in various stages of construction and flight. Each large image is almost overwhelming in detail; a few scenes stretch 30 inches across two pages. There are unusual close-up maintenance shots and succinct explanations about test flights and various scientific missions … Concorde represents an unusually compelling portrait of an extravagant aircraft.”

Airways Magazine
"This over-sized and lavish production of the iconic Concorde provides an account of a prodigious aeronautical enterprise and of the technical and human exploits needed to ensure that this extraordinary aircraft, the outcome of exemplary European cooperation, saw the light of day...Gorgeous photos of exteriors, engineering details, and interiors—even of the place setting served in first class—are reproduced on the highest quality paper to pay tribute to the airplane synonymous with speed, luxury, and style...A must-have collectible edition for anyone who flew on Concorde, or for any serious commercial aviation library."

5.0 out of 5 stars A book of beauty and history for a good price!, June 10, 2008

This review is from: Concorde (Hardcover)
A book full of beatiful and impressive images of the most fantastic aircraft of all times. Very interesting historical accounts including a connection with the history of supersonic flight. As an engineer, ex-VARIG Airlines Maintenance I would like (obviously) to see more technical info, including drawings and schematics, but that is not the main scope of this nice work. Incidentally, it seems that a thorough public technical description of the aircraft, for aviation fans, is something missing in the literature. Considering that more than ten museums around the world have a real Concorde in their collections and certainly have acess to plenty of documentation on the machine, some of them could help producing such a book. Let's hope... Meanwhile, enjoy this book!
