Concrete Garden Projects highlights a variety of projects and interesting items that can be made from concrete. There are definitely some things that I never considered making, like tea light holders and board games. The Project Handbook instructional section is informative, but I would've liked more directions or more pictures during the process. I also would have liked to have some more of the decorative techniques explained and demonstrated, like adding color. This book is great to get ideas and make simple projects, but doesn't offer much in the way of advanced or highly decorative projects. With that being said, the commentary was good and the authors gave great tips on where to find things and what they used for casting.

I first learned of "Concrete Garden Projects: Easy and Inexpensive Containers, Furniture, Water Features and More" from an issue of "Better Homes and Garden" magazine. The book promises much, but falls short on basic information. For example, the "recipe" for concrete for the projects is limited to pre-mixed concrete. There is little information on finishing the projects, coloring concrete, polishing or achieving special effects. The gallery pictures are inspiring, but the text left me needing to find more in depth sources.

This book is fine for pictures and ideas of small finished projects. It is only adequate when it describes processes for actually making and finishing the projects, however. Large photos are the first 4/5ths of the book, showing the finished setting aided with lots of greenery. The last part has small photos and barely adequate explanations of the process. There is little of no talk of using techniques to get a different look to concrete (color tints, different texture techniques, etc.)Perhaps OK to start out with, but nothing that gives a hint of larger projects or more advanced projects.

I thought this book would have recipes for making those light weight concrete and vermiculite containers. Not so. I thought it would have better projects but they are pretty homemade looking.
I could take some ideas from the projects and develop ideas for molds, but overall I am disappointed. The book is very nicely designed and the photography is good. You could make some simple candle holders, stepping stones or pots. The cover is probably the best design in the book.

A lot of nice photos, but not enough detail on mixes, tools, dyes, how-tos. Too much repetition of the most simple steps.

This is a good overall book about the possibilities of concrete and its applications outside in the landscape. There are some fresh ideas here, and they are all easily completed.

I guess I was expecting more on the types of concrete, concrete dyes and more on finishing as an alternative to expensive stones.. good book for decorative ideas though and it's inspired some thoughts that I'll have to experiment with...
