Book Description

Concrete August 15, 2006
A troubled man seeking spiritual renewal in the wilderness experiences a wholly unexpected rebirth - as a walking monolith, half a ton of animate stone able to perform astonishing feats of strength and endurance but forever denied many of life's fundamental pleasures. As Concrete, Ronald Lithgow becomes an overnight celebrity and the focus of dark government operatives desperate to keep the secret of his metamorphosis from the public. Concrete must struggle with the loss of his humanity while discovering, perhaps for the first time, what it truly means to be human.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A decade after creating Concrete, a mild-mannered man transformed by aliens into a massive, granitic being, Chadwick retells the character's origin in a screenplay Chadwick devised for an abortive movie. Here Chadwick stretches out and shows his maturity as both writer and illustrator. Unfortunately, the colors of the original 1998 comic books are supplanted by gray tones, making this edition affordable but drabber. Ten additional stories include one in which Concrete "meets his maker," as Chadwick visibly steps in to offer his long-suffering creation a moment's respite. Gordon Flagg

5.0 out of 5 stars relax in an easy chair and turn the pages, May 20, 2010
This review is from: Concrete Volume 6: Strange Armor (v. 6) (Paperback)
CONCRETE 6: Strange Armor, story & art by Paul Chadwick, lettering by Bill Spicer (208 pgs., 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1996,
1997, 1998, 2006). This is one fine graphic novel. This entire oeuvre has really grown up. I guess the father of the modern graphic novel could have been Will Eisner, who recently passed away well into his 80's.
This anthology volume contains a film script that didn't get filmed, issues one thru five of the Dark Horse comic book series, as well as stories from various individual books.
Alien technology has turned an unassuming American into a living concrete being with superhuman powers, except he has lost his powers to touch & taste. He can still love; but he can't physically make love. How does one live like this? How does one stay away from all those seeking to make a buck off of him or even to turn into some weapon for sale to the highest bidder? Chadwick comes up with various plot lines. All we have to do is relax in an easy chair & turn the pages. This is one fine read.
