More ups than downs, but the downs dwell in the abyss.,

This is easily one of the more frustrating CDs I've heard in a long time. There are some great guitar solos and excellent riffs all over but then a level of cheesiness rears its ugly head on songs like "Warrior" and "Thunderbird" and I feel nothing less than crestfallen. The focus meanders and the vision of the songs suffer, or worse, the lamer sections bring down the entire album. There are some magnificent passages that bring back the glory days of Judas Priest, driving and forceful and demanding your complete attention. But then there are moments here and there that reminded me of the Dark Ages of Heavy Metal, AKA the late 1980s Hair Metal era, that had me cringing. I simply cannot recommend this CD for that reason alone. The end result is a mixture of incompatible styles that had me wondering if the band members ever sat down and discussed what kind of album they wanted to make in the first place. There are more good parts to this release than bad ones, but it is too inconsistent to recommend.

This is the fifth Iron Savior album, and the last in the overall sci-fi saga of their super weapon/sentient space station. I admit I like the whole concept of the story, but in this album it was running thin and the overall tale is cofusing...an anti savior...a renegade scientist??? I guess this is why they left behind the whole thing after this one. In the musical deparment the band delivers, make no mistake about it. But they started to sound the same, like many other german power metal bands, they hit a point where they feel the found a formula and then they stick to that like super glue. But Iron Savior is one of the best, and even with that flaw, this is a good metal album.
