Warm and beautiful prog/fusion,
By Bodhi Heeren (Copenhagen) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Condition Red (Audio CD)
Lars Eric Mattssson belongs to the uncanny persons who not only are endowed with a godgiven musical talent, but also have had the stamina and inner fire to develop to the max. A superfast guitarshredder, a fine keyboardplayer. And not least a brilliant bassist, superfast, razorsharp with a wonderful deep yet distinct sound. Not unlike his legendary countryman the great Jonas Hellborg. But first and foremost is Mattsson a profound composer/songwriter. Able to mix a highlevel of technicality with memorable hooks and choruses. And infusing it all with a certain undefinable presence and human warmth. And in a way very Scandinavian, reminding me of the reclusive Bo Hansson, Secret Oyster and Made In Sweden in their fusion days. As Condition Red he collaborates with the likes of fellow guitarvirtuoso Alex Masi and progkeyboardlegend Derek Sherinian (Planet X a.o.). As well as violinist and vocalist Ella Grussner and saxplayer Esa Pietilä. The drums are handled by Eddie Sledgehammer, who despite the name is a rather subtle fusionlike drummer. Not one to just pound superfast double bass drums pattern, but swinging and letting his playing serve the songs. A beautiful mix of progressive metal, symphonic metal and 70s jazzrock. Classy and classic honest and genuine Music.
