Editorial Reviews

One of the touchstone post-punk LPs, 1981's It's a Condition saw this great Bay Area band conjure up images of suicide, emotional isolation and love gone wrong against a hypnotically stark background. Here's White Sweater; Myself to Myself , and the rest plus their single Apache and singer Iyall's eclectic 1986 solo debut!

The weltschmerz and rancor I perceived in Debora Iyall's voice, whether it was actually there or just in my mind, drew me to Romeo Void, along with the intricate poetry and alternative jazzy instrumentation. "It's a Condition" is a marvelous showcase for that, a debut album that remains an unrecognised classic.

Love as artistic subject matter usually reads as trite to me, and that prejudice of mine is hard to overstate. Yet this album overcomes. It puts much focus on romance, but more the idea that "Love Is an Illness." The album starts with "Myself to Myself," a song about the beginnings of love and the consequences--an apt introduction. Then it goes into "Nothing for Me," a song about naïvety. The title might remind some of what losing their virginity feels like. Third comes the sex stomp "Talk Dirty (To Me)," energetically moving the album along. In the fourth track, the statement of the album is made--"love is an illness;" in fact, "it's a condition." After that is my personal favourite off this album, "White Sweater." Phantasmagoric seems like a nice adjective for it. It's a song inspired by a poem Debora wrote after experiencing a dream in which her sister died wearing a "White Sweater" that she had given her; but even this song has its love bashing, describing a man trying to rape her. The surreal lyrics in this song are worthy of poets laureate like Patti Smith. This was Romeo Void's first single, the song that propelled the band into underground stardom. And next was a mesmerizing song about a love in "Charred Remains"--a great follow-up. It seems as though "White Sweater" was a dream, and "Charred Remains" was a morning scene awakening. The next track, "Confrontation," is about the struggles of love, often violent ones.

Something strange envelopes It's A Condition...Debora Iyall's detachment creates its own atmospherics involving dysfunctional relationships. Sure, she sounds a bit like Mae West but that only adds to the mystery. Well produced, well done, fairly intense. // Strange Language has interesting moments, but it's not in the same league as IAC. SL has more drum-machine-sounding stuff, is less inventive, borders on over-produced synth.

I'm too intimately familiar with both albums to offer an unbiased critique! Many great memories. Many great listenings!
This is some of the best music that has ever come out of San Francisco - long, long after the hippie era! .Let that one go - PLEASE!!!
So...immerse yourselves! You won't be disappointed!
