5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Handbook
I have read this book about 4 times in the 3 months I've had it. It is brilliant to find a book that deals with the conditioning side of the game only. I have been looking for something like this for years. I am nearing the twilight years of my own playing days and have found that by adjusting the programs and levels to suit where I'm at, I have improved my game in the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Conditioning for Soccer
I don't normally write book reviews, but I was very disappointed with this book and felt obligated to balance the other overly enthusiastic 5 star reviews. Some of the material, such as the chapter on "Strength Training Exercises", is really not soccer specific. Also, the chapter on "Speed Training" is largely comprised of games such as "Numbers...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Handbook, April 19, 1998

I have read this book about 4 times in the 3 months I've had it. It is brilliant to find a book that deals with the conditioning side of the game only. I have been looking for something like this for years. I am nearing the twilight years of my own playing days and have found that by adjusting the programs and levels to suit where I'm at, I have improved my game in the season I've just started. The drills, exercises and explanation of all forms of training are easy to understand and thorough. My only criticism would be of the chapter on weight training where I wonder whether if you followed what is set down you might be in danger of overtraining muscles and not allowing enough recovery time. The 16 week program was a great finish to the book putting into practise all you'd read before it. I will be looking for more books from Joe Luxbacher and thank him for producing something I will be using for my own sons if and when they decide to play Soccer.

This book lowered my 2mile run from 16 minutes to 13.5 in hardly 1.5 months. the off season training guide is comprehensive and differs each day so as to not get bored. plyometrics add true fun. Much of the book focuses on other aspects of soccer such as quick turns and acceleration. Even a section on pregame eating for peak performance.

I don't normally write book reviews, but I was very disappointed with this book and felt obligated to balance the other overly enthusiastic 5 star reviews. Some of the material, such as the chapter on "Strength Training Exercises", is really not soccer specific. Also, the chapter on "Speed Training" is largely comprised of games such as "Numbers Passing Game" and "Three Versus One in Grid", which Luxbacher had the audacity to simply excerpt from his other book "Soccer Practice Games"(a far better book with great games I have used successfully with my travel soccer team). The 4 page chapter on Plyometric training was interesting, but overall don't waste your money on this book.
