5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough, well-documented and interesting
For information on maintaining and rearing clownfish, this book is unbeatable. Every aspect of culturing and rearing marine fish, from hobbyist's tanks to large commercial operations, is described in detail. His opinions are supported by actual data, either from the records of his years in aquaculture or from the scientific literature. Thus, when he writes about the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the amateur
I really couldn't read this entire book. Actually, it borred the isht out of me early on and I put it down. This book is much more geared toward the 'semi-pro' fish breeders or marine biologists. This isn't for the casual reef keeper who just wants to have a pair of clownfish in the display that breed and then raise the spawn in a seperate smaller tank. Really way too...

This review is from: Conditioning, Spawning and Rearing of Fish With Emphasis on Marine Clownfish (Paperback)
Thus, when he writes about the importance of a given parameter, it is more than just a casual observation or repetition of lore. The focus of the book is the production of healthy baby fish, which requires healthy adults, eggs, and larvae. In a systmatic way, Hoff describes the effects of filtration, light, water conditions and food on all life stages, providing an integrated view of the process. Although this is not the "only book you will ever need", it is a valuable addition to the collection of the experienced aquarist, and would help to eliminate much mystery for the beginner. The prose is not helped by the grammatical and typographical errors, but is generally straightforward and clear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but very technical, August 29, 2007

This review is from: Conditioning, Spawning and Rearing of Fish With Emphasis on Marine Clownfish (Paperback)
If you're trying to breed clownfish at home and like the technical scientific background on commercial breeding, this is your book. It's not written for easy reading, and it's a bit too detailed in places and lacking in others. It makes a great place to look up data when you're having problems but tough to just sit down and read.

This review is from: Conditioning, Spawning and Rearing of Fish With Emphasis on Marine Clownfish (Paperback)
When I bought my first mated pair of clownfish (maroons) last month, the folks at the store said, "There is only one book you need to understand them completely...." this one, and they were sure right. This book is simultaneously comprehensive and specific, and it is delightfully readable -- filled with very instructive information about breeding of all clownfish.

This isn't for the casual reef keeper who just wants to have a pair of clownfish in the display that breed and then raise the spawn in a seperate smaller tank. Really way too technical of a read for casual hobbiests. Its 3 stars b/c I didn't read all of it and can't comment on the quality of the information provided (neutral review) - this book just isn't for the hobby market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Necessary resource for the marine fish breeder., March 24, 2008
This review is from: Conditioning, Spawning and Rearing of Fish With Emphasis on Marine Clownfish (Paperback)
If you ever thought about breeding, don't even think about not buying this book. It is very technical but so it the subject. This is the life work of a dedicated biologist and is a masterpiece.
