I purchased this after moving to NYC in what turned out to be a blazing hot summer. I had no previous knowledge of these devices, but not wanting to disregard local laws (and more importantly, get in trouble with our building super) I went ahead and ordered one to keep in full compliance.

My first, second, and third attempts to install this were a dud. Pre-war Manhattan apartments, as it turns out, have very thick walls and deep window sill preventing any sort of installation that looks like what is pictured in the instructions. My first two attempts left the unit leaning into our apartment which I knew would mean the condensation would be joining us inside as well. The third attempt achieved the right slope, but left the A/C unit about 1.5 inches above the lip of the window frame (and leaving me with a lot of left open space to block.

Finally, I called a local handy man, and he shifted it further down the sill, away from the lip of the window sill that the instructions tell you it should be touching, which allowed the rubber foot on the the brackets support "leg" sit correctly, and the bracket to have the proper slope. $60 later (and after a laugh at my inability to solve the installation puzzle), I now have a properly installed A/C unit that is fully supported, tilts in the right direction, and sits on the sill directly.

So, for those living in NYC that need a bracket - this one DOES work, but not as described in the instruction manual.

Summary - does its job (+5 stars) but instructions were completely unhelpful (-2 stars)

The nice thing about this bracket is you can install it from inside without getting on a ladder.
The bad thing: It probably won't fit on your window.

The design requires that you have a window sill (not all windows have one) which extends for a certain length - not too much or too little from your outside wall. It also requires that your window not extend to high above the sill (vinyl windows have a border which seems to be too high).
You will be able to install the bracket. The problem is, the hinged support underneath won't reach your outside wall. Or, if it does, the angle will be too shallow to provide adequate support. Or you may get lucky.
I bought two of these and it wouldn't fit properly on either apartment where I tried to install it. (the fit is hard to explain, which is probably why they didn't).
They tried to make it adjustable. There are plastic spacers and multiple screw holes. They just did a poor job.

Won't work with flush mounted windows unless you place a ledger outside and notch it to seat the cross piece. The design of this brace assumes the window has a sill. Once installed, it works but for windows without a sill be prepared with some tools, i.e., tape, power saw, and drill.

Great design and very easy to put in. Simpy put - it does the job. Only negative is that I found it at Home Depot for less!

Do not get this if you live in NYC in an apartment or if you live in a brick house. The horizontal bar that extends outward and supports the AC will be too short for most brick apartments in NYC, especially pre-war standard NYC brick co-op apartments...don't even think about getting this if you have one of those super old extended ledge pre-war windows.

I ordered this for the Frigidaire 8,000 BTU Frigidaire--which is around 50 pounds.

Invest in the next one up which is longer and supports 10,000 BTU and up.

In the end, hot and annoyed, wanting to get the AC installation over with, I called a local PC Richard, received verbal confirmation they carried 2 types of brackets (under 10,000 BTU and over 10,000 BTU), physically went there, got the longer one, paid probably $20 more than Amazon but priceless in instant gratification, and got it over and done with.

If you have ever mounted a window AC alone then you know how helpful it would be to rest it on a shelf. If you have ever worried about an AC flopping out if the window was accidentally opened. This bracket provides very good protection against unintended falls. I had no problems mounting it in an "average" double-hung window, but did find it hard to get at the correct angle due to the shape of the AC's underside but I can't see that as any fault of the product - I got it set up very well but it took a little effort to do so. I bought 2 of these (one in this version and one in the heavy duty) for 2 different sized AC's and found both to be acceptable so I disagree with other reviews who rated this as "flimsy" when used with my ~40 pd. unit.

This support bracket is manufactured from heavy gauge steel. The product comes with with three 4" wood screws for mounting the supplied concave block and rounded spacer to a wooden sill. Additionally, two more stackable flat spacers are included if you should need more height. The concave mounting block will attach somewhere along your sill in a location lying between the A/C's outer window panel frame and the outer drip-end of your wooden sill. Mounting location of the concave block will vary according to the specific angle of your sill and the specific configuration of the air conditioner base plate you are supporting. To clarify this point, if your A/C is perfectly flat along the bottom, you will have more consistent contact between the A/C base plate and the flat support body. My air conditioner does not have a flat base so therefore contact to the flat support base is not consistent end-to-end. I prefer to install my window air conditioner with a slight downward pitch toward the ground to ensure adequate condensation drainage.

This product comes with adequate instructions. However, be prepared to adapt the installation instructions to meet your specific installation requirement.
