Product Description

CONDOR TOOL & KNIFE traces its proud history back to 1787, the year GERB WEYESBERG COMPANY was founded in Solingen, Germany. The quality of the swords, military knives, agricultural tools and household cutlery they manufactured made Solingen the cutlery capital of the world. Over the generations, the world’s largest manufacturer of swords and knives found it necessary to expand operations to other countries to better serve its customers. In 1964, the company formed IMACASA with a new plant in Santa Ana, El Salvador and filled it with state of the art German equipment. Some of the original local employees who were sent to Solingen for extensive training forty years ago are still working in the factory today, turning out the finest quality machetes, shovels and other hand tools.

I own MANY Condor knives, and machetes. But all of them, until this purchase have been made of carbon steel. This has been my first purchase where Condor's 420HC steel is used in the blade.
I have only had the knife for a short while, but my worries over the stainless steel were swayed by many other knife users who assured me that Condor's heat treat of their 420HC was equal to, or equivalent to BUCK's.
HOWEVER~
The fit & finish on this knife was horrendous, causing me to do a bit of sanding on, and around the handle. The handle-end pommel (indented wood) was cut so rough that it was immediately irritating to my palm as I held the knife! Condor handle wood often comes very dry, and this particular handle was no exception.
The Blade itself had a "dent" (or perhaps one might call it a blemish) right on the swell of the re-curved blade edge. This meant that any attempt at slicing, resulted in a tear, or tug when using the edge of the blade. So, the only way to "remove" the dent was to remove all the steel around it! (this is the only way to remove a chip in your blade)
It was several hours before I had a blade with no *snag while slicing with it. The stainless steel was much more difficult to work with then carbon steel. But, finally, with all the protective coating sanded away, the knife is where it needs to be in terms of function.
After the processing, I have a good convex edge, and a fine feeling knife in the hand. The handle has been sanded, cleaned and sealed, and now...I can finally get down to using the blade to test it against the reputation of Buck's steel, and it's non-stainless Carbon steel.
Overall, this was a fun "project" knife.

Like the over all feel of the knife, but not a fan of stainless. The edge could use a better contour, but could be the type of steel. Over all I still like Condors products. Well put together for the price and would purchase any of their products again.

I bought two of these knives and they are definitely designed to be used. They feel incredibly solid and well made, but there are noticeable problems with fit and finish. Some of the handle wood stain is on the blade of one of the knives and overall they have a someone cheap look to them. Additionally, one of the leather sheaths that came with the knives is incredible tight and the knife has to be really forced in each time. I know the leather will eventually loosen and the other problems with the finish of the knives in no way take away from the durability.

Overall I'm happy with the purchase, some minor inconsistencies are to be expected for a knife at this price. I'd rather have a strong knife that looks a bit sloppy than the opposite.
