5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Match of Repertoire, Orch, and Conductor, September 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Conducts Ravel & Debussy (Audio CD)
Koussevitzky's 78 rpm recordings of Debussy and Ravel were the first choice during their era of the thirties and forties. There is more passion and intensity, and more precision of approach to dynamic contours, than under his successor Charles Munch (an interesting, energetic, and inspiring conductor nonetheless, but one who could not extract the last degree of polish from the ensemble.) Mark Obert-Thorn's transfers from the 78s are done effectively and maximize one's pleasure in listening to these classic performances.

3.0 out of 5 stars Do you like your Ravel measured or asleep?, April 27, 1999

This review is from: Conducts Ravel & Debussy (Audio CD)
Koussevitzky's interpretation of Ravel drags compared to that of Claudio Abbado. Abbado conducted a BSO performance of the same works on Deutsche Grammophon many years ago, and I wish I could find THAT on CD--after all, Daphnis et Chloe is a ballet, not a dirge.
