I think I have just met my LUNCH!,
By Kim (CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Conejito: A Folktale from Panama (Hardcover)
My (mainly Spanish-speaking) kindergarteners love this story, and enjoy helping their hopelessly monolingual teacher pronounce the Spanish words. The repetition is great for this age, the song is catchy, and the humor makes the story fun for the teacher too. We also took the time to examine Panama (where the story originated) on the map.
This is one of the handful of books I pull out when we've got that extra 5-10 minutes, or when they're wild and I need to get them focused again.

This is a really fun story. I am a teacher and have read this story many times to my students. The children love the story and always say out loud the repeating lines in the story. It is also beautifully illustrated.

My kids looove this book. My son brought it home from the library (he picked it out!) and it was an instant hit. We had to purchase it for our own library. The book has a great rhythm to it. There are a few phrases that are repeated in English after they are stated in Spanish but for the most part it incorporates Spanish into the book very smoothly without any awkward translations (although a translation key is available). It has a variety of phrases that repeat and of course children learn an repeat quickly. The storyline is simple and uncomplicated. It would be a great addition to any child's library regardless of their abilities to speak or understand Spanish. I wish I could find more books like this! A+++

Author Margaret Read MacDonald has done it again. She is a multi-faceted and internationally oriented writer of many children's books. This is another charming winner.
This playful book relates a folktale about a rabbit from Panama. Ideal for young children. It helps Spanish speakers learn English without realizing it or struggling. Not a boring education book. Intelligent humor blended with a repetitive song throughout makes knowledge acquisition easy. Spanish pronunciation charts help non-Spanish speakers learn as well. It is a God sent for kindergarten and first grade teachers.

A fun, rolicking book!,
By Heather Walker (Bowdoinham, Maine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Conejito: A Folktale from Panama (Hardcover)
My girls (ages 4 and 6) love this book, and have loved it since the youngest was 2. Not too wordy, lots of fun with a repeating song throughout, and a natural transition from Spanish to English that introduces some foreign language without seeming "instructional."
