Mexican film noir . . .,

The intricate plot of this thriller keeps you guessing from moment to moment as it takes sudden and unexpected turns involving corrupt police and government officials and a young couple with a baby who are inadvertently involved in a political assassination. This film goes quite gladly over the top as it pushes the envelope of credibility, and it might be even more gleefully thrilling if the rising crime rates and levels of violence in Mexico didn't tend to support the view we get of it. Be forewarned, there's plenty of melodrama - picture a young woman escaping from police detention with a gun in one hand and a baby in the other. Then hang onto your hat.

I rented (and since, bought it) with no particular interest after having watched The crimes of Padre Amaro and Amores Perros, which I liked very much. I liked this one better. I live in a border town, where across the border in Mexico, unbelievable violence gets reported every day. If I feared going to Mexico before, I am even more fearful now. It is a very credible situation, that of being framed. Worst of all, (I have first person accounts) the people most to be afraid of are in fact, the so called authorities. Living across the river form all that mayhem makes you appreciate our Americn way of life all that much more. God Bless America! That's right, it sure made an impression on me.Tuscan
