Editorial Reviews

Special Collector's Edition of the album originally released in 1981 by the Canadian four-piece named after a mental institution in North London. Trying to take a more twisted approach to rock than their American big hair counterparts. with rolling riffs and off-kilter melodies, and produced by legendary Canadian artist Kim Mitchell, this release features three previously unreleased bonus tracks from the original sessions, has been completely remastered and contains a 16 page booklet with new photos, extensive memorabilia and a 4.000 word essay written by Howard Johnson. Rock Candy. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't pass this one up January 11, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I would recommend this album over the greatest hits. Because it has a sound of it's own. I was never impressed with their other 2 albums. I know this CD is very pricey. But trust me it is a ROCKER.
I would put it in my top 20 at least. The song Devil's deck got some airtime when the album came out. I still hear the song Monkey bars on Pittsburgh radio stations. I have heard that it is a Pittsburgh thing, but it should be a nation wide play. I"m not one to compare bands to other bands. So let me just say that you gotta give this one a listen. There is not a bad song on this album.

Amazing group that I missed first time around in the early 80s; have all 5 of their CDs now; highly recommend to any true fan of the 80s; and they are from north of the border

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific '80s arena rock album, terrific reissue April 13, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Canadian melodic rockers Coney Hatch made their debut in 1981 with this Kim Mitchell-produced self-titled album. Coney Hatch is one of my favorite Canadian rock bands, and they're definitely one of the most unfairly overlooked. The band had a great Foreigner meets April Wine arena rock sound, and should have been major stars in the mid-`80s.

You can really hear the Foreigner influence on this album. Opening single "Devil's Deck" is a fantastic rocker, and one that could easily have been found next to "Jukebox Hero" on Foreigner's 4. This has a lot to do with guitarist/vocalist Carl Dixon, whose voice is quite similar to Lou Gramm's. Coney Hatch rocks a little harder though, in a working class Y&T kind of way. Aside from "Devil's Deck," "We Got the Night," "Stand Up" and "Victim of Rock" are standouts. The only places where Coney Hatch stumbles a bit are the two songs sung by bassist Andy Curran. He's not bad, but it breaks up the album's flow to go from Dixon's smooth and steady vocals to Curran's more subdued style.

Coney Hatch's debut is a terrific example of why the `80s arena rock sound was so much fun. If you're an 80's rock fan, you definitely should not overlook this classic Canadian band.

Edition Notes: Reissue specialists Rock Candy Records issued a fantastic new version of Coney Hatch in 2005. The reissue features brilliant, crystal clear digitally remastered sound, expanded liner notes and three bonus studio songs - "Dreamland," "Where I Draw the Line" and "Sin After Sin." These songs were all recorded during this album's sessions, and are a great addition to an already impressive album. It's enough to bring this 4-star album (OK, 4.5 stars) up to a full 5-star rating.

They have a compilation entitled "The Best Of Three", but, in my own personal opinion, this is just that!
