Great concert, not quite "A Night With" but better then most!, December 12, 2008
This review is from: Coney Island Baby Live [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Lou Reed plays in front of an enthusiastic crowd in New Jersey, with his (near) greatest lineup of Robert Quine and Fernando Saunders, minus Doane Perry (this would make his greatest lineup) and a less-imaginative but serviceable drummer in his place. This video was released in 1987, but the song list would place it before the 1986 "Mistrial" album and Quine being on board makes it likely from around 1984/1985. Hands-down the best performance of "Coney Island Baby" - it is bone-chilling and awe inspiring. Beautiful and tragic. There's some good latter Reed gems - "New Sensations" (one of the highlights with Reed's & Quine's guitar interplay), "Martial Law", "Legendary Hearts" and Velvet Underground chestnuts - "I'm Waiting for the Man", "Sweet Jane", "There She Goes Again", "White Light/White Heat" - and of course a very energetic performance of Lou's standard "Walk on the Wild Side". The accordion was a bit much on "Doing the Things We Want To" but I can't really find much fault with else here. Lou seems more energetic and interactive here then on "A Night with Lou Reed" which really adds to the performance. I still find "A Night With" better, most likely due to the material and the intimate setting. But this is still worth checking out.
