5.0 out of 5 stars Take if you need an overdose of feedback & sludge!!!, October 4, 2000
This review is from: Confederacy of Ruined Lives (Audio CD)
The sludgemiesters are back & better than ever! Confederacy just blows your head off with a very slight increase in speed and intensity. The best song is "Inferior and Full of Anxiety" which has such a jerky tempo it makes your brain squirm. If you like EHG, buy this album damit!

so it inspired me to go clear some things up for anybody checking out this album as a result of it(author of 'choosing death's new magazine). they claim that after the long hiatus between dopesick and this album, they released the worst album of their careers. maybe, but this album still rules and i can't compare it to their debut cuz i haven't gotten it in the mail yet.

plain and simple, it kills. revolution/revelation will get you pumped up and ready to smash things. the following tracks after that will make you want to smash things too. few bands are as groovy, sludgey, nihilistically pissed off, and just plain good as eyehategod. that's about all you need to know.

i should note that after the feedback interlude in the middle of the album, it's over for me as my mind has drifted onto other things. the songs after that aren't bad, they're still better than a lot of sludgebands but even as i write this i can't recall the riffs. it doesn't really bother me though, because i feel i've already gotten my money's worth after the first half.

at any rate, if you're a fan of sludge or are getting into it, don't let a couple of downer opinions stop you from checking out one of, if not the most prominent names in what could be considered 'sludge metal/doom'. my favorite EHG songs are strewn across all bodies of their work so if you're looking for a suggestion as to where to start, i suppose 'take as needed for pain', then 'dopesick' or 'confederacy of ruined lives'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eyehategod still as sick as ever, October 4, 2000

Eyehategod return with a new full-length that doesn't stray far from the territory they pioneered. These New Orleans-based sludge fiends continue to pound out down-tuned feedback-laden riffage from the land of all that is Tony Iommi. The production and execution are somewhat cleaner than past efforts, but those previous offerings were never clean at all. Not for the weak at heart whatsoever.

First, you almost have to already be an Eyehategod fan to like their most recent music. They definitely seem to be a love `em or hate `em band, at least with the people I know. So this review isn't really for people who've never heard them, but more for any fan who, like me, just never got this cd when it came out. Take as Needed for Pain was my favorite EHG album, with their other two studio releases about even for me. So I couldn't have been more pleased to hear that it sounds like Take as Needed Part 2. Not that it sounds like a copycat, but the distortion, the crushing mid-paced sludge, the tortured screaming of Mike Williams...there's just something about the songs that recalls their sophomore album. The first release, In the Name of Suffering, was slower overall, and their third album, Dopesick, infused more speed into the sound. Confederacy goes back to that mid-paced crunch of Take as Needed for Pain, with some classic EHG riffs and jams. I wouldn't think people who have followed this band since the early 90's would expect much of a change in their sound, so they should be very happy with the heavy, brooding power of this fourth studio album.

We have here another excellent album from EHG. This one, IMO, is meaner with a cleaner sound production-wise. It's sludgy and dirty just like you'd expect. SUPPORT EHG!

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the NOLA sludge factory., August 8, 2003

This stuff makes me feel dirty just listening to it. As soon as I throw this on I imagine myself waist-deep in Louisiana swamp muck. The riffs are straight out of the Black Sabbath playbook, but they feel different somehow. It's like someone took what Sabbath did, drained the few points of light out of it, and left nothing but the darkness. And the riffs come in wave after wave. Nothing is faster than mid-tempo and when things slow down, it goes REALLY slow. Think molasses. You can actually fall asleep to this stuff if you're not careful.

This is the very epitome of a doom record. It would be the soundtrack if the world was ending. Mike Williams' vocals are definitely on the different side, sounding like the rasps of someone terminally ill. And the feedback from the extreme riffage is enough to make the weak-hearted scurry for cover. You can't just listen to these songs on their own either. The whole album needs to be listened to in order to fully understand what's going on.

I love this stuff, but I would only recommend it to a select few. The hardcore and nu-metal kids won't get it and the death metalheads will think it's too slow, but if you're into bands like Soilent Green, Acid Bath, or Superjoint Ritual then I definitely recommend this. Start with this album, which I consider their best. Also, check out their earlier stuff like Dopesick and their (mostly) live album, 10 Years of Abuse (And Still Broke), too. Gotta love the title of that last one.

5.0 out of 5 stars why does the upholstery stink?, December 3, 2001

This album kills. Tracks 3 & 5 are the best. "Blood Money" (track 2, I think) is pretty good too. No real big departures from the EHG formula , other than it's really well produced & recorded. All the feedback, fuzz and moans are crystal clear 128 kps, 44 khz quality. The artwork kills too. Definite tattoo fodder.
