This book has to get a 5-star rating. The authors did an outstanding job of giving some organization to a subject where the extant underlying information is only anecdotal and non-systematic.

The authors gathered lots of photos and other information about Confederate-made knives that has not been before assembled. I was hoping to gets some clues about a D-guard which I own, and was impressed to find one in this book that had a blade and tang with the same architecture, dimensions and configuaration as mine. The corresponding knife in the book would certainly fit perfectly in my scabbard! The grips were similar, and there were three characteristics of the D-guard which were the same. Never thought that would happen!

The book also gives useful information about the nomenclature of knives. One matter of nomenclature in particular is exactly the opposite of sword nomenclature! When one wears a sword, the side facing away from the body is the "obverse" and the side facing the body is the "reverse." But when one wears a knife on the left side, the side facing the body is the "front" and the side facing away from the body is the "back." In the past, Civil War enthusiasts have incorrectly applied sword nomencalture to knives.

So, there is all kinds of information in this book about Confederate-made knives that is not elsewhere available. It is really an indispensable reference on this subject.

If you are a collector of Bowie knives, especially Confederate knives, this is absolutely essential reading. At over 280 pages and literally several hundred photos and illustrations...the vast majority in color, it is the only publication that completely deals with the subject of Confederate Bowie Knives. It discusses the individual makers with beautiful large color photos of the knives made by each.

Any student of the Civil War, regardless if you collect these knives or not, should own and study this wonderful addition to the history of these knives. Simply beautiful and crammed with all the information you need.

I would also recommend the book "The Bowie Knife" by Norm Flayderman as one needed with this book. Flayderman's book is a wonderful history of the Bowie knife with information of manufacturers outside of the Confederacy. Both books are wonderfully done.

As someone who has a serious interest in American Civil War weapons, I recently discovered this title in an Amazion search. I purchased it and am extremely glad I did. This is an outstanding and outrageous work. So many things make this book stand out. The photographic section is fantastic! So many knives! So many designs! Such a variety of manufacture and the photographs present the weapons very well. But there is so much more. The authors have included much information on the makers of the various knives displayed in the book. There is a section on actual knife usage taken from period literature and there is a splendid section of period photographs showing confederates proudly displaying the kinives (this really gives you an idea of how BIG some of these things actually were!). If you are someone who has any interest in bowie knives or civil war weapons, this is a volume you will want to own. The authors deserve hearty congratulations for a job splendidly well done!!!

Many years ago when I first started collecting Civil War memorabilia, I met a collector and seller named Jack Melton. Mr. Melton had some rare and unique items for sale and always offered top quality items of unquestioned provenance. I was very pleased to see that Mr. Melton has put together this impressive book about one of the most confusing aspects of Civil War collecting -- Confederate Bowie Knives. What is a Confederate knife and how can a collector who may be required to put out thousands of dollars be sure he is getting all that he should for his or her money. This book goes a long way toward addressing those concerns. It is readable and well organized and features some great illustrations that highlight the general types of knives that most collectors would encounter. It is not a book for everyone but should get a spot on every advanced Civil War collectors bookshelf.

This is a "must have" reference for Civil War historians as well as for collectors of these historically important weapons. Many of the knives in this book had not been photographed until now. The book also contains many period images of soldiers holding or wearing these knives. This is far more than a book of photographs however, as it quickly becomes apparent when reading the text that years of scholarly research went into this project covering all aspects regarding the history and the manufacture of Confederate Bowie knives. Kudos to the authors.
