By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Confederate Cookbook, The: Family Favorites from the Sons of Confederate Veterans (Hardcover)
In The Confederate Cookbook: Family Favorites From The Sons Of Confederate Veterans, Lynda Moreau has gathered up 340 diverse and delicious recipes from contemporary Confederate kitchens that range throughout every region of country but evoke the flavor of the Old South as past down to the descendants of the Confederacy through the more than 27,000 member "The Sons of Confederate Veterans", an hereditary organization. From Lynchburg Layered Salad, Southern Meat Loaf, and Skillet Chicken and Gravy, to Great Granny's Confederate Sweet Potato Souffle, Copper Carrot Pennies, and Fried Apple Pies, The Confederate Cookbook is a grand compendium of highly recommended dishes which are further enhanced for the family cook with historic anecdotes and images of identified Confederate soldiers.

Wonderful recipes, a book filled with taste and heritage,
By A Customer
This review is from: Confederate Cookbook, The: Family Favorites from the Sons of Confederate Veterans (Hardcover)
The Confederate Cookbook is the star of my cookbook collection. The recipes, family favorites of Sons of Confederate Veterans and their ancestors, are the best. Photos of those ancestors and chronicles of their service to the south make this a must have book, not only for cooks, but for anyone interested in preserving Southern heritage. I gave one as a gift and treasure my own copy.

A Great Idea and Tribute to the men who fought for the south,
By Linda Acker (Joshua, TX, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Confederate Cookbook, The: Family Favorites from the Sons of Confederate Veterans (Hardcover)
I just got my copy and have not had time to try any of the recipes, but the text listed on each contributor is worth the price, along with the pictures of the veterans. The Sons of the Confederate Veterans and the publisher are to be commended for this work. It is time we all took a look back and honored our ancestors who fought for a cause they dearly believed in. To honor them and to preserve our heritage and history as it really happened. In the light of the attacks on their memory and the effort to destroy and/or change history as it really happened, this book should be in the library of every buff of the War of the Rebellion. I can't wait to dig into Great Granny's Confederate Sweet Potato Souffle.

I first tried a recipe out of this book at a friend's in North Carolina. I asked to thumb through the book to look at the other recipes and was immediately taken. As soon as I returned home to Montana, I got onto Amazon and orderered it. I've cooked recipes out of this and have already gotten several people asking for the recipes. I'm going to order more to give as Christmas presents. I LOVE this cookbook! I love the old time recipes which are already tried and true. Feels like coming home when cooking and eating these great recipes!

My sister had a copy of this book, and I liked the recipes in it, so I searched for it and found it on Amazon. The book arrived quickly, but I was upset to find that the book reeked of stale cigarette smoke. The seller should have stated this in their ad. Even after having this book for a year and a half, it still stinks every time I open it to look at recipes. If you are going to order anything from this seller, I suggest you email them and ask if it smells of cigarettes. Otherwise, the cookbook is a good one if you are looking for Southern recipes.

I was really excited when I bought this book thinking that these were period recipes and recipes handed down from generation to generation. Each recipe is just a modern recipe that families with a Civil War ancestor happen to like. I only counted one recipe that did not involve a modern ingredient ( Velveeta, Tabasco sauce, muffin/cornbread mix) and most of them have many modern ingredients. This book really gave no historical information whatsoever. If I was just looking for modern recipes, I would have went to the library. I'm sure this book was good for homemakers who like to feel that they are preparing "authentic southern dishes," but it's just not the case. I was really disappointed, if you are looking for period recipes, this book isn't for you.
