CONFEDERATE GENERALS OF GEORGIA AND THEIR BURIAL PLACES
Back in the 1990s Robert H. Kerlin operated Americana Historical Books in Fayetteville, publishing a number of books on the subject of the Civil War. He noted that several other states had books dealing with Civil War generals and their gravesites, and found that Georgia lacked one. He decided to do it himself.
Reams of research and 4,000 travel miles later, he produced Confederate Generals of Georgia and Their Burial Places.
Kerlin found that 56 Confederate generals, plus three high ranking naval commanders, are buried in Georgia. A special section describes 24 additional generals who were Georgians or led Georgians and are buried in other states.
Georgia's generals were a remarkable group. Of the 56 generals, 22 were college graduates, with 13 of them alumni of the Military Academy at West Point, and two were cadets who resigned from the school in 1861. One naval officer was in the first graduating class of the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Fourteen resigned commissions in the U.S. Army to serve the Confederacy. Nine men were killed in battle and two were victims of disease. Postwar, four of these men became state governors or members of the United States House or Senate. Truly, Georgia had a remarkable collection of military leaders during the Civil War. As the Sesquicentennial continues I will post biographies of many of these men.
In the book each general receives two or more pages that include a full biography, a photograph or period depiction and a photograph of their grave, with the name of the city and cemetery, plus the section, lot, block and/or space of the grave's location. These cemeteries range from the largest and most historic in the state to small family plots.
A section gives directions to each cemetery and instructions on how to locate the graves (if you have ever done any cemetery research you know how difficult it can be to find one particular grave). There are six maps of cemeteries where the most generals are buried. In Savannah, Laurel Hill Cemetery has eight and Bonaventure Cemetery has six. There are seven buried at Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery and seven in Augusta at Magnolia Cemetery. Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon and Linwood Cemetery in Columbus each have three.
Confederate Generals of Georgia and Their Burial Places is a 200 page hardback book with dust jacket. Unfortunately, this book is out of print. A few copies are available from Amazon. Buy a copy, or check it out of your local library or use the interlibrary loan system. Perhaps demand during the Sesquicentennial will see it reprinted. It is an invaluable Civil War resource and a handy guide to carry on any road trip. It might be rewarding to visit the grave of a general who led your ancestor during the war.
