EXCERPT ONE: "This Regiment was called out April 14th, 1861, and went to Columbia, S.C., from which place I wrote my first letter home, and from that time on I endeavored to give an account of our travels until the Regiment ceased to be even a battalion, in July, 1862. . . . In writing the letters at that time I stated nothing but facts in regard to our movements, or what I thought to be facts, and I can also say that I still think them facts. . . . A goodly number of my old companions in arms and others, knowing that these letters had been preserved, have urged me for several years back to have them published. I have at length concluded to do so, hoping they may to some extent interest the reader and benefit the writer. Please pass over all errors, as I have never studied grammar a day in my life, and am by no means a learned man. I hope that grammar is not what you want, but a plain statement of facts. These pages are written so the most illiterate person can understand, and if so,! most assuredly a scholar can. Without further remarks, I will say, 'Such as I have, give I unto thee.'"
EXCERPT TWO: "There are some who passed through and saw more of hard service and trials than I did. Then there were others that did not undergo what I did, and I hope that what I have written will be read with interest and appreciated, as I have tried to give to them the truth. The horror and terror of prison life is one; being deprived of freedom and liberty, let that prison life be what it is, it may be of war or criminal or by quarantine or detention in some way; and you may have all the necessaries of life bestowed upon you by friends; but being deprived of liberty and freedom is a terror and a horror to anyone. It, at times works so hard on mind and body that the ones confined are not at themselves and is often misapplied for mistreatment. And to a large extent both North and South have stepped over the line of fairness, and have done great injustice in regard to treatment of prisoners of war, while it was bad enough to a large extent mistreatment has been enlarged upon; each trying to paint as black and hidious pictures as possible - trying to outstrip the other. Let us be fair and honest with each other and have the truth, and may the white winged dove of peace hover over our beloved country for all time."
EXCERPT THREE: "A true pen portrait of an individual, distinguished for noble traits of character and noted for great achievements in life's work, be he soldier, statesman, preacher, or poet, is the most impressive and perhaps the most useful form of history.
"The reader finds in the portrayal that which acts as an incentive to imitate the good, and finds, too, that which bids him shun the errors and avoid the mistakes of him of whom he reads.
"If biography, then, serves so useful a purpose in the field of literature, may it not be that autobiography, with egotism eliminated, might be made to serve the same high purpose by presenting what ought to be a truer picture of the man and his work, because written by the individual himself.
"The author lays no claim to distinction great enough to be heralded to the world by his own pen or that of another. As an old man now, with his feet at the water's edge of that cold, narrow sea which separates the mortal from immortality, he feels that he would like to tell the story of his life, and tell it as it was.
"Trusting that it may not prove uninteresting to the public, and especially to Texans, he begs their kind indulgence in presenting this little volume of the recollections of a Confederate soldier and the strange twistings of a life of forty years on crutches."

This review is from: The Confederate Regimental History Digital Library CD-ROM Version 1.0 (CD-ROM)
This CD-ROM worked right from the very first use. I bought this item several months ago and only recently dragged it out for my history and genealogical research. I should have pulled it out a long time ago. There are a plethora of books, stories, accounts, etc. written by people in the Civil War. There are some muster rolls, chaplain accounts, soldier accounts, regimental histories, etc. (the list goes on). YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET TO USE THIS CD-ROM. There are a couple of "squirrely" facts about this program: (1)You have to type in a password to access the contents (password is in the insert sheet). Not sure why this added step, but, since you're given the password, no problem; (2) You have to keep up a screen running in the background that enables the search engine. Again, no problem, but I couldn't figure out why. I looked up how much it would have cost me to purchase each item included in this CD-ROM and was floored. If you purchase each item separately at an average cost of $20 each, you would spend well in excess of $2,000 and that wouldn't even begin to touch the shipping. Of course, this all assumes that YOU COULD EVEN FIND EACH BOOK. This is one of the best purchases I ever made.
