5.0 out of 5 stars Good, clean reading, filled with intrigue, suspense, mystery
I finished the first book, The Shunning, only to feel completely lost and frustrated...surely this was a cruel hoax....it could not be ending, there must be more. I was not disappointed! There WAS more, indeed, in this second book! Wow! For the first time in all my reading days, I found it completely impossible to resist frantically searching through the pages to be...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first
I greatly enjoyed the first of this series "The Shunning" by Beverly Lewis. However, this one failed to grab me. It seemed like it was a very rushed novel, yet, despite this, not much was done in it.

It takes off where the last book left it, Katie (now known as Katherine) is staying with some Mennonite relatives and is searching for her birth mother. She...

I finished the first book, The Shunning, only to feel completely lost and frustrated...surely this was a cruel hoax....it could not be ending, there must be more. I was not disappointed! There WAS more, indeed, in this second book! Wow! For the first time in all my reading days, I found it completely impossible to resist frantically searching through the pages to be sure this or that did, in fact, happen...things just could NOT go on as they were...I could not wait to find out by reading a page at a time...I had to frantically search the pages until I knew... The continuation of the story of Katherine, Laura, her Amish family, Mary, and the wise old woman...and the bishop...and her true love...this story took so many strange turns and curves, it was impossible to second guess the author. Suspense ruled! Bev Lewis never let me wander from the story line....how could I? I practically read the book straight through! It was just glued to my hands and would NOT go down until I was done. Book #3? PLEEEEEZE!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book. A cliffhanger of sorts., November 19, 1999

When I bought these books as a set from Guideposts, it seems like I took a chance. But then I have wanted to read about the Amish. And I'm glad that I did. When I finished The Shunning, I could not wait to start reading The Confession, and then The Reckoning. The Confession taught me to find where your heart is at, even if it means that you have to make sacrifices. In all, it took me four days to read all three books. If there are more fictional books about the Amish, I like to read them. However, I would like to close by saying hello to the Amish and God Bless Them. They are wonderful people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Decisions Must Be Made, November 3, 2000

I read this book several years ago, but it still comes to mind quite often. I read the entire Lancaster Series by B. Lewis, and was amazed by the insites into the world of the Amish. This book takes the main character away from the Plain folk and brings them to the world of her worldly, wealthy birth mother. It shows the decisions that she must make to determine where God is leading her. I recommended this series to my sister-in-law. And she indicated that though this was not the type of book she reads, she actually loved the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful moving story, August 9, 1999
By A Customer
I had the pleasure of visiting Lancaster Co. this summer and then the pleasure of reading not only The Confession but The Shunning and was really suprised to find that alot of what I saw of Lancaster Co. was true and as I read each book I could imagine being right there with the characters. I can't wait to read The Reckoning.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SERIES, September 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Confession (Hardcover)
I read the whole series. The story was so realistic and interesting. I read the last book slow because I didn't want it to end. Ican't wait for Beverly Lewis's next book. She writes so well. Just enough details to make it interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read in a long time!, June 3, 1998
I only got this book because I was waiting for a book to be released from another series I am reading, but not I am so glad that I found it! I couldn't put this book down. After I read book #1 The Shunning I went right back to the library and picked up this one. I couldn't wait to read more about Katie. I have recently been reading a series based on the Amish by Lurlene McDaniel. I think this series will definately equal or top the series by Lurlene McDaniel. Just release book #3 soon. Please!!

4.0 out of 5 stars My review on The Confession by Beverly Lewis, December 11, 2005
I thought the Confession was a great book. I think Beverly Lewis was trying to help us understand that some people will do anything to gain wealth and power. She also shows how important family is. I think the best part of the book was when the main character was working under cover in her real mother's home. I liked it because it was full of suspense and the reader didn't know if she would get to know her real mother before she passed away. I thought that most of the book was believable. I really couldn't find anything wrong with it. I thought the most believable part was the time of shunning. I have heard about sunning before and I think the book portrays the concept well. The part of the book that came as a surprise to me was the fact that when the main character was shunned, she put her Amish back round behind her so quickly. I thought she might have become Mennonite like her cousin. I liked the ending of the book because it makes you want to read the next book. If it didn't have a sequel, the ending would leave too much unknown. The ending really made me want to read the next book to find out what happens next. I still have some questions after reading this book that I would like answered. One of them is "Why would have the main character's Amish parents have kept the silk dress? It seems like they would get in a lot of trouble if their bishop found out. I thought that they would have gotten rid of it so they wouldn't get in trouble."

I would suggest reading this book if you enjoy suspense. It's a great read and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Confession" held me captive from first line to last., July 22, 1998
By A Customer
Mrs. Lewis story about "Amish" raised Katherine brought to mind the reality of confusion that many people, Amish, Baptist or whatever, may have with believing in every doctrine, rule or way they have been taught from birth. Through this wonderful book, she so brilliantly conveys the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the freedom that comes with that relationship. I, too, am sitting on the edge of my chair, waiting for the continued story of Katherine's new life, as mistress of Mayfield; young, vulnerable woman needing acceptance and love and daughter of two mothers, one a brief memory and the other feeling forlorn and rejected. Please, please, publish #3 real soon!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first, April 3, 2010
I greatly enjoyed the first of this series "The Shunning" by Beverly Lewis. However, this one failed to grab me. It seemed like it was a very rushed novel, yet, despite this, not much was done in it.

It takes off where the last book left it, Katie (now known as Katherine) is staying with some Mennonite relatives and is searching for her birth mother. She finds what she thinks is her mother only to encounter a rough time with her husband, Dylan Bennet who is waiting for his wife to die so he can inherit her wealth.

Katherine leaves her relatives and goes to her mother's house, only to find that another Katie Lapp has appeared there and has been welcomed as her mothers daughter. While she was debating going, Dylan had hired an actress to fool his wife by thinking the girl was her heir.

Katherine, unsure of what to do, takes a position as a maid at the household and hopes to get close to her mother. Being that her mother plans on announcing the inheritance at Christmas, the next day, time seems to run short for her. Especially when Dylan finds out who she really is.

It sounded like a promising sequel when I read the summary of it. However, the reality wasn't as promising. Lewis hurries the story along but its so boring and inconceivable (who would let a deception like that take place knowingly?) that I didn't have much patience with it and was glad it didn't take long to read.

While Lewis' writing is always pleasant and authentic, it just didn't make up for the story line.
