My 10-year-old son got an agent in New York at age 8 and we were thrown into the high-pressure, unpredictable audition process in sink-or-swim fashion. We've had to learn everything by trial and error. If I'd read this book then, I could have saved my son from a lot of heartache and humiliation along the way! The casting process is almost always entirely mysterious and this book works magic: taking the reader behind the scenes of the casting process and into the head of a casting director! It's an easy and engaging read, covers every question a stage parent/actor might have, and is written by an expert who has been on both sides of the casting table. I loved the "Epic Success" and "Epic Fail" audition sidebars, in which actors shared their audition experiences. All the direct quotes from other experts in the field were illuminating as well. Thanks, Jen, for giving actors and stage parents such a useful tool and fun book to read (I read it in one day--could not put it down). I also highly recommend Jen's acting workshops, which my son has attended. Instruction from the people who actually cast actors in major movies and Broadway shows--it doesn't get better than that.

I bought 'Confessions of a Casting Director' as an early Christmas gift to myself - and finished it in two days.

As a professional actor, I can't even begin to list all the books that I've bought over the years in the hopes that I would be given some sort of magical advice that would help me land that national commercial or lead in the latest film by that legendary Hollywood director.

After reading Jen Rudin's book, which is filled with extremely practical, relevant and personal advice, I feel the most confident and inspired to go out and enjoy the process of auditioning...regardless of whether or not I book the job or not.
Jen's book, in addition to enlightening me to the truth that auditioning can be an end in itself rather than a means to an end, is written in such a way that made the very act of reading 'Confessions' a joy in of itself.

It is indeed, the perfect gift.

If you want the straight, unvarnished truth about the business, then read this book. Jen's first-hand experience is invaluable having lived through and succeeded in multiple facets of the business in both NYC & LA. Her advice and guidance is priceless to the beginning actor and the already-established performer will find many valuable nuggets that can only be learn directly from someone who has been there. Though actors of all ages will find her anecdotes instructive, if you have a child interested in the business, pay particular attention to the 'Stage Mom' sections of the book.

This review is for the kindle formatting alone, not the content. So far the content is good. However, I've only finished chapter one as there are 30 pages in chapter one that have SINGLE letters going down the page. That's right, all words have been broken up into a single letter on it's own line. This is the case for 30 consecutive pages and also in various places throughout chapter 1. Who can read like that! It's horrific and whoever formatted this for kindle should be embarrassed to release that. I would like to return this kindle version and receive the physical book or get my money back.

It was useful and had some good advice but a few too many personal stories and antidotes. I was in this business in the past and was curious as to what is happening now. I was wanting more info for me as a casting Director but this was written for the Actors so not so useful for me.

Just finished Confessions of a Casting Director and loved it. The stories of Jen's life in acting, her zig-zag journey through 'the biz', and her first hand accounts of casting nightmares all added up to a delightful tale of what to do - and not do - when just starting out and deciding to be serious about an acting career. Probably not a lot here for the seasoned actor or actress - other than a fun read - but for theatre Mom's and Dad's and young budding stars, this is a must-read.

This book keeps you wanting more page after page. Im an actor who was going about business in the wrong way. After reading and implementing most of the suggestions mentioned in this book. So far I saw 4 agents and 2 managers. One of wish Im meeting up with again this week. All I know are new things, good things are starting to happen. If it doesnt happen that I make 50 million a year then so be it, Ill take it for the love of craft. At least now I see results. In any case, this book has valuable insight for the actor. I truly recommend it, Makes you want to do things to help yourselves. And if you are ever blessed enough to go in front of Jen' and you didnt read her book yet, bring her bologna sandwiches, her favorite. Thank you Jen for this book, It truly helped. I'm an interdisciplinary artist who recently admitted to herself that she would also like to be a television, theater, and film actor. Jen Rudin's book is serving as an invaluable guide as I navigate through the overwhelming yet fascinating world of show business. I read it in two days! The book offers insightful dos and don'ts of the industry from audition room etiquette to proper actor resume formatting. Her honesty is refreshing and the stories of failures and successes that pepper the book are encouraging, but more importantly real. Actors, do your research!
