Editorial Reviews

Product Description
A laugh-out-loud memoir about a city slicker who discovers that Manolos and manure just don’t mix.

At her husband’s prompting, suburban mom and New York career woman Susan McCorkindale agreed to give up her stressful six-figure job. Together, they headed down south to a 500-acre beef farm, and never looked back. Well, he didn’t look back. She did. A lot.

From playing “spot the religious billboard” on the drive to rural Virginia, to adapting to a world without Starbucks, to planning bright-orange hunter-resistant wardrobes for the kids (“We moved here to get away from the madness of Manhattan only to risk getting popped on our own property”), this is her hilarious account of how a city girl came to love—or at least tolerate—country life.

About the Author
Susan McCorkindale, a former marketing director at Family Circle, is now a freelance advertising copywriter in the wilds of Virginia. But she still loves the New York Giants, Bruce Springsteen, and the Jersey Shore. This is her first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every multi-tasking woman should take a break and read this book!, October 19, 2008
By Trisha Clark (Long Island, NY, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The city mouse moves to the country in this REALLY, REALLY funny book. Susan put her hyper-personality in the pages with her signature tangents that are even funnier as footnotes, lists, indices and much more that pop up throughout for a truly enjoyable read. The best part (and the most important part, I think) of the book is its ability to speak to you personally, whatever hat you are wearing at the moment - working mom, stay-at-home-mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend - about topics that really hit home, from coffee, cleaning and exercising to bathing suits, families and juggling life. She gets to the point, makes you cry but leaves you laughing, all while helping you realize that it's just life and it's funny, so maybe we shouldn't take ourselves so seriously-- at least not all the time. Confessions of a Counterfeit Farmgirl is an amazing first book by a creative, talented author. Buy it and read it!
And then tell all your chick friends!

4.0 out of 5 stars Footnotes. Who knew?, November 5, 2008
Generally speaking you can't successfully use "sassy" and "footnotes" in the same sentence, but those words capture the true fun of McCorkindale's book. Her outside lookinging in perspective on rural america is wicked and enjoyable at every turn. A perfect getaway.

4.0 out of 5 stars And fun entertaining book, if you skip the footnotes, January 11, 2009
It's a cute story with a good message: high-powered marketing director for a big-time magazine gives up life in the big city to go live in the country with her husband and two sons, realizing that there really is more to life than designer clothes and shoes. The fact that it's true makes it nicer. The author has a witty style of writing that is enjoyable, even if it is a little on the dramatic side. My only real complaint is that she has--for some reason I cannot fathom--decided to use footnotes, of all things, in her writing. (Did she take those college writing classes that literally?) It may have been a gamble on her part, giving the reader witty little anecdotes to refer to, but the result, for me, was that I felt like reading the book was work, and, after awhile, I just didn't want to do it anymore. I was then left with the option of skipping the footnotes, (which bothered me because what was I missing?) or giving up on the book entirely. My final word: it's a fun read - sans footnotes - and the message is a good one.
